just bought a Cateye 1000 w/ 10 blinking lights. nice light, trouble is, it only came w/ a seatpost mount and I always have a tall rack trunk on my rack. I would like to mount the light on my rear rack which has reflector mounts. Has anyone rigged up something w/ zip ties etc? The light has a small plastic tab that slides into the bottom of it and has a screw hole which would work fine if the mounting bracket on my rack was at a right angle instead of flush w/ the edge of the rack. Any suggestions?

Here's what the awesome guys at my LBS rigged up for me when I got my rack. Did it at no charge and without me asking . Love those guys.

It works great, every once and a while I will kick it or something but all it does is rotate on the end there and I just have to move it back.

I use a cable tie on my rack, works fine.

I don't know about your Cateye, but the Blinky Superflash comes with a seatstay bracket. I was able to wrap some old tube around the rear support on my rack and use that mount. When using a pannier, though, it hides the light, so I clip it to my seat bag.

PlanetBike has a "reflector mount" available... I dunno if it works with the superflash, but I know it's out there. Sold separately, or bundled with a couple of lights. (the Vista-like one I know has it)

I have both the Rack Blinky 5 and the SuperFlash, and both lights work on each other's mounting brackets.

I've mounted a cateye 1000 to a reflector mount, just gotta find the right size screw. What's with the reflector mount that won't work? maybe post a picture of the rack?

I know this doesn't add much to the discussion but as great a light as the 1000 is and it's my best tail light, the versatility of the Superflash for mounting makes it much more valuable.

The CatEye 1000 and 1100 fit standard reflector mounts. Even comes with the screw right in the box.


The short screw is self-tapping.


Before mounting to the rack, with no batteries in the unit, screw the self-tapping screw into the back of the light so it will tap its threads and push any excess plastic out into the battery compartment. Use a small screwdriver to chip away excess plastic pushed inside the battery compartment.


I also had to use a presta nut as a spacer when mounting mine to my rack.

I went nuts with my latest commuter. I found a piece of steel in the phone room where I park my bike. It's a distribution frame block mount for telecom wiring, about 6" long, slotted, with 1" offset mounting ears at each end.

I bolted it to holes I drilled in the back end of the Delta rack, and I used a hot glue gun to attach two
Performance blinkies. Between them is a red rear reflector, possibly 30 years old. Above that array is a very bright Cateye 7-LED blinkie secured to the trunk's carrying strap with elastic cord run through the blinkie's clip.

Add to this a helmet-mounted blinkie and a retroreflective "Illumilite" jersey, and I look like a two wheeled Winnebago rolling down the road.

Anybody wants one of those dist. frame block mounts, It's a Distribution frame mounting bracket for an ADC/Kentrox connection terminal block. If you can catch your friendly neighborhood telephone company guy at a Central Office or microwave/fiberoptic site, he might give you one if you ask him real nice. I'll try to post a picture.

If you live anywhere near east-central Georgia, I'll round one up and give it to you.

Thanks for the pics and instruction. I had no clue what that little screw was for as I've never met a "self tapping" screw before. One more question: I've tapped the lower hole w/ the small screw (the hole that is flush w/ the unit). What about the hole that protrudes up a bit? tap that also? I tried but it seems like a tough go. thanks

Pretty sure it fits all their tail lights. Fits the Superflash. That screw setup seems kinda goofy. Can you just pop the light off and move it to another bike,or do you have to unscrew it? The PB mount works just like the regular seatpost mount. Also,did you seal up the battery compartment after installing the screw?

The screw on setup is nice for security reasons.
The screw doesn't penetrate the housing so no need to seal.

Nope. The protruding "pin" is just that. It fits through the upper hole of the reflector bracket to keep the light straight. See the third pic.

That is pretty slick. The cateye 1000 is a heavy light though. I've lost a couple I had jury-rigged rack attachments from rack stays from metal fatigue, the light bouncing up and down eventually led the rack stay to snap.

This light will mount to any reflector bracket just exactly the way a reflector does. Most racks used to have reflector brackets included. Now I think some don't. Some may get lost. You might be able to get one for free at a bike shop.

Cateye do make a rack mounts for tail lights, it's just hard to find them.

I found the Knog Bullfrog tail light and I'm testing it on the back of my rear rack. It's got a flexible flap attached to the light body that can wrap around just about any surface shape or size and latch back onto the light's body.

Long 1/4-20 bolt, nut, and 2 fender washers through a peace of PVC plumbing pipe. Then just clamp your blinkie on the pipe.

rongarcia - it looks like your light is mounted in the wrong orientation. It should be mounted horizontally, not vertically. When mounted horizontally, vehicles that are not directly behind you will also be able to see the light.
