I think a small amount of Fredness would occur with anyone who is starting out. After awhile I would think they would stop trying to compete, drop the buzzwords, and get comfortable with whatever style(s) of riding they have chosen. One school of thought is 'buy the best equipment, always' but all the awsomeness in the world on wheels doesn't do me any good if I have cold feet about adjusting something on it, or pushing it to it's limits (ultra clean, detailed Humvees, anyone?).

I like the way a spandex shirt is tighter around his stomach than it is around his chest.

What IS cool is way his naval is so clearly seen clinging to his tight spandex shirt.

I think it IS COOL that his legs can be so brilliantly white squishing out of his tight spandex shorts in the middle of summer.

Everybody knows that chicks are turned on by self-confidence. He spits in the face of social critisism and defies them all with his unbending self-confidence.

The extent to which I care about fast cars anymore is limited to actual race cars being driven by professional racers. Race cars are freaking awesome! Not only do they accelerate fast and have high top speeds, but they can turn sharp and stop on a dime. Watching race cars zip around a tight corner then scream by you is exciting. Watching a porsche sitting at a stop light or driving through traffic is no more exciting to me than watching a geo metro do the same. Only the guy in the metro might have more money for beer and his grandchildren's college funds (given equal incomes).

In my case I am and actual Fred.
And if there are any others or for your general amusement...
https://www.fredsociety.com/

With the depreciation on a car I'd make a better use of my money too. I took my little cheapie in to the shop the other day and watched this woman's mouth drop to the floor when the guy told her the break job on her BMW was going to be $1500...priceless.

If it was me next to the Porsche....

I'm rolling what I want, and he's rolling what he wants; what we want is so different, we could never be buds. But as long as he doesn't intrude into my ride, I couldn't care less.

Riding home from work one day I roll up to a stoplight & rest next to a pretty blond in a yellow Porsche convertible. To her left are 2 boys in a Monster Truck playing loud music, revving engine etc. trying to catch her eye. I say hello & chat with her until the light changes, she waves & zips off. (Monster truck boys don't know she is a colleague who works in the cubicle next to me

One of the reasons I ever thought about commuting was to save money. For what though? I make more than I need and I will have a sweet law enforcement pension. Cars. Thats right I sold the car I own to one day own the car I want. A red carrera with red rims? A ferrari or maybe a 66 shelby gt 350, who knows maybe there will be a cool electric mercedes that can do 300mph by then? I want one. When I was a little boy I wanted one. When I was a 14 year old rebel I wanted one, when I was a 20 year old hippy type I wanted one, now that I am the kind of guy who could care less about TVs, commuter cars, boats and anything other than travel I want one. Exotic cars are f'n cool. Will I drive it like I stole it? No. I will fire it up and listen to it run. I will go down to the drag strip once, and I will drive it to rite aid to buy toilet paper at a safe speed.

Maybe I am not old enough yet but a few things have always been cool/fun to every man I know from toddler to death. Even if they didn't own or use these items they knew they would be fun to play with/use.

*Guns(not killing things, but making a loud boom and hitting something far away. Some guys I know have a political agenda against them, but if they were in a safety no anger vacum world they would enjoy shooting a gun.)
*Sports cars/Go-Karts/Race Cars
*Dirt bikes
*M-80s(scare the crud out of me but if someone is lighting one I will watch)
*club house/tree house/bachelor pad/den/basement

Most men will not turn down the chance to be involved with these items unless they have been burnt by them in the past. Hell if someone asked me to jump a porsche on a dirtbike while I shoot at m-80s that will release the keys to my own den I wouldn't think abut saying no, and being injured outside of work is my biggest fear in life.

Yet here we are, grown men & women, pedaling our toys to work & back... and getting leaner, more buff, and just plain better looking every day in doing so.

That's cool.

And he probably went home to his nice house and his trophy wife. Yeah, his life must suck.

And his wife is likely to do things most of our wives think is dirty. Probably with other women involved too cause they're all in it for the money. His life is living hell.

The bicycle is older than the car, and people were even riding them before they rode trains.

And I suspect that a hundred years from now people will still be riding bikes, but cars? Maybe a few.

Bikes are toys, sure, but they are a very legitimate form of transportation, and will be more accepted and respected in the next few years.
