Does this bike exist?
My 0ld Schwinn hasn't been used much lately because I have a Tri-cross for regular commuting, and a road bike. The Schwinn is racked and fendered, and I use it as a "family" bike, since I am the one who ends up carrying the family's stuff, and as a rainy day commuter since it has fenders. Its old, needs some work, and worst of all, weighs in at almost 40 pounds with the rack, fenders, and seat bag. I can really feel the different geometry, fit, and weight now that I have become accustomed to the tri-cross and road bike. So I would like a new, lighter bike to take its place for family outings on road, sidewalk, and crushed limestone path, as well as rainy weather commuting:
Road Bike geometry and handlebars
Brake/shifters
Top bar brake levers
Rear rack eyelets
Compact double or tripple chain ring
Fenders
Rear Rack
Standard pedals (no clipless)
V-brakes (but Cantis if I have to)
32 tires
and here is the biggie: weighing in at 25 pounds or less racked and fendered.
I realize that I can rack and fender my tri-cross to get this. However, I want to keep my current tri-cross unfettered (its a fantastic limestone path bike). Somehow, buying another tri-cross seems a little wierd, so is there another bike out there? I could probably use my current rack and fenders on the new bike.

Hmm, well, I know you can get racks that don't need the Eyelets, Fenders too.
the V-brake thing might be a bit more complicated without dropping a lot of money.

Schwinn? I thought that bike weighed in at at least 29 pounds to start?.
I should also add I was looking for the 25lb weight while also carrying a road morph pump, spare tube, patch kit, and multi tool in a seat wedge bag.
My LBS was showing me a Specialized Sequoia today. I don't know its weight, but with the alluminum frame and carbon fork it would probably be pretty close. I am only being a weight weenie because I hang the bikes in the garage, and that 40 lb schwinn is a pain to lift over my head. I guess a pound or two over wouldn't be a deal breaker.

How about a Kona Jake? Or JTS if you want the compact double. It has center-pull cantis, comes with 35mm tires and you'd have to add the rack and fenders (braze-ons are there), but otherwise it sounds like what you're describing. Not much under 25 pounds, but I think it's under.

More specifics on the model of Cannondale? My research was hampered by the Cannondale website refusing to list weight. (god I hate that!). I know a rack and fender set will be in the 2.5 to 4 lb range, so a bike that is 20 lbs naked would work.

Salsa Cassaroll.
Is very close.
If you can find one, a Salsa La Raza (2007 was the last year of production & you are going to have to build it up) perfectly fits your bill.
With racks, an IGH, and fenders mine comes in at 26 pounds.

Raleigh Sojourn:
Steel frame; triple chainrings; fenders; rear rack; Avid disc brakes; Brooks B17 saddle; Brooks leather bar tape; etc.
Nice bike. Get a pair of used Tiagra brifters and some cyclocross brake levers and you'll have your bike...

sounds like you want a cyclocross bike that can take fenders and a rack. i know jamis, and kona and surly make bikes that can do this. i'm not sure how heavy the steel surly's are though.

Most cyclocross bikes have rack and fender eyelets.
Three things about weight
1. The sojourn weighs a ton.
2. Racked and fendered, most bikes that fit your description will weight more than 25 pounds
3. Weight doesn't really matter much on a commuter.

But it makes a difference when I lift the bike overhead for the auto rack and for hanging it from the rafters in the garage. This does not mean that a 30 lb road/touring/cyclocross bike wouldn't be better than the 39 lb rig I seek to replace, but when seeking a niche bike you have to set parameters somewhere. My Tricross fits the bill, but I don't want to rack and fender it, I want it naked for bombing around the limestone paths nearby. It may be that I would be better off with a 30 lb touring bike to double as a commuter/family bike, there would seem to be a large number too choose from.

Just weighed my Kona Jake. With rack, fenders, lights and seat bag it comes in about 27.5 pounds (+ or - for the accuracy of my scale or lack thereof).

Hmm.. you'll have to be looking in the 20-21lb bike range to add on another ~4lbs for your pump, tools, repair kit, rack and fenders. At 20-21lbs you're going to have to fork some heavy money for that light weight and it might cost you in the ~$1000+ range.
Not sure on the weight of the stock model but you might also want to call up Trek and find out on this model. https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...land/portland/
Nice looker too.
Of course if you wanted a 20lb bike with your kit, fendered (QR fenders) , and racked (QR rack) then you might have to look at a Cervelo. Tho I think your wallet would have a heart attack at the price.

Trek still makes the 520, and it's always a solid choice:

It's either bar-ends and V-brakes or Brifters and canti's. They sell adaptors but they don't work too well.
I have a Trek 520 with
bar-end shifters
Tektro RL-520 levers with V-brakes
PB Freddy Hardcore Fenders
Blackburn expedition rear rack
32c tires.
The cross levers on the tops... I'm not sure if they make them with enough pull for V-brakes.

It sure seems that most road bikes that can take 32 tires and have brifters have canti brakes. I suppose I should just accept canti's, rather than shoehorn a 32 tire onto road bike caliper type brakes. I don't have much interest in the bar end shifters.
Andy -
how does the rack work out on the Jake? Any problems with the foot getting too close to paniers on the cyclocross frame?

Got in some quality shopping today.
Jamis Aurora - steel touring bike, canti's - 27.5 lbs naked
Kona Jake - rather large knobbies, canti's- 25.5 lbs naked
Specialized Sirrus sport - FLAT BAR, v-brake - 23.5 lbs naked
What the heck was I doing trying out flat bar bikes???? I started to think that was the only way I would be able to get a light weight bike that made my cut-off of 25 lbs racked and fendered. At least locally. I get seduced by some low price point yet still light flat bar bikes, but I know I will regret it later. weights were done by the LBS scale
