Weird thing happened on the MUP this morning

I was riding in this morning and I was about 13 miles into my commute. It was still dark out and I was cruising along at a good pace (for me) at about 17mph. I am kind of lost in my own world not paying 110% attention and I suddenly become aware of someone next to me. I am like WTF! They didn't have a light like they should have, they didn't say "on you left", and they didn't have a bell. I glance to the left and it isn't another cyclist at all, it is a deer and it is only 3-4 feet away I know I am slow but this is the first time I have been passed by wildlife. I think I also set a new record high on the heart rate monitor.

After the deer broke off the breakaway attempt I was back to riding in the dark by myself thinking... hmm that was kind of cool (after the initial shock wore off)

Cool indeed!! My one encounter with deer on a pedal bike was on my MTB. I was riding a trail all alone when 3 deer as paralleled the path for a few seconds running though the trees. Pretty neat!

That was worth posting.

I hope you were where the animal can get back to its environment safely.

Ironically, I had a deer experience last Friday. I was walking my bike between our two cars in the driveway and heard the clanking of hoofs. A deer walks right in front of me right as I'm mounting up. When it saw me, it took off up the street and through someone's yard. I get deer on my street and in my yard quite often. Unfortunately, I live on the corner of a busy street and I've seen a few dead ones on the side of the road.

I have had the same experience a couple of times on a MUP through some woods along the river...what worries me is which way they finally jump! Deer / Bike collison = Deer wins!

I was hit by a deer once in my car. I was going about 45mph and the deer came out of the woods, racing toward the front of my car. I guess I thought quickly enough, because I speeded up to avoid hitting him, since I knew I wouldn't be able to stop in time.

He slammed head first into my car, got spun around by it, and flung into the grass on the side of the road. Unreal!

So, I slowed down, turned around, and by the time I got back a truck was there.

The deer was lying there with his eyes closed, breathing. The truck owner asked if I had a gun. I didn't.

So he suggested putting it in his truck and that he'd take it home and shoot it (to be humane and help the suffering). I said, "He might just be stunned, and might cause all kinds of trouble for you if he wakes up."

Sure enough, a minute later the deer got to his feet and ran into the woods.

On my pre-dawn commutes to work it is not usual to see deer. One morning sometime back I saw one up ahead on the grassy shoulder of the road.

"Good morning, Deer. How ya' doin' this morning?" Or something like that as I approached.

Well as I'm getting up even with her, she decides to run away. But now she's running down the shoulder alongside me.

"<Hmm, this is not cool.>" I've had close calls with deer before.

She decides she wants to cross the road (what I was afraid of) so she accelerates and hangs a hard left about 15' in front of me. When those little deer hooves designed for running on dirt hit the asphalt she busted her butt like she was on ice. So now I'm bearing down on a thrashing doe taking up almost my whole lane. I shifted right in the lane and was able to pass behind her just as she found her feet.

The whole thing was pretty funny, especially when her feet shot out from under her.

Come to think of it, I saw another doe just this morning in just about the same place. Passed pretty close, but this one didn't run. I wonder if it was the same one.

I would have been even more surprised if the deer had said "on your left"!

I had a similar experience while driving my sister's 3-cyl diahatsu back in Arkansas. A deer was crossing a highway and slammed into my driver's side door and window! Lots of damage to the car, some to my pants, very little to the deer.

Had one about three years ago... I'm not sure if it was trying to leap me or the road, but a head high airborne deer just a couple feet front of you looks about the size of a moose.

If I had been just a wee little bit faster, or the deer had been just a wee little bit slower....

"What happened to CR? I haven't seen him around lately."

"Oh you didn't hear? He got killed on his bike."

"Really? Hit by a car?"

"Naw, the bike's fine, he got hit in the head with a deer."

Yeah, right. He was thinking "Mmmm, venison" . In Michigan, deer lying by the side of the road get picked up very quickly.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any deer on my rides yet. Lots of woodchucks though.

Well obviously deer is an ahole and a snob for not saying "on your left" and passing silently.

+1

Fresh venison + almost no time or money spent to obtain it = happy camper. At least where I come from.

It is hard to beat good venison. Buffalo is almost as good, but harder to come by around here.

One morning on my way to work on the MUP, I saw a big buck up ahead of me a couple hundred feet or so. He saw me coming and started running...along the path! I was on my fast bike so I decided to try to keep up. After a couple of minutes or so I was about to puke I was trying so hard, and I couldn't gain on him for anything. He looked like he was just kind of trotting somewhat urgently.

I was on a ride with some friends in Western NC and while coming down a mountain pass came across a doe with 3 younguns. I stopped about 20 feet from them, mom quickly made her way across the street. The young ones had no idea what to do. They looked like Barry Sanders trying to avoid a line backer. It was quite funny really. After about a minute of juking and jiving, they finally figured out I wasn't trying to pursue them. Wildlife is awesome.

Almost had a deer take me and my buddy out on our weekend ride on Saturday. Heard about three of them next to us, while we were doing like 17mph. tried to scare them off in the opposite direction, instead they accelerate and try to cross the rode. Buddy was in front of me and slammed on his brake to avoid them. Would have laughed pretty hard if he'd slammed into one... After checking to make sure he was alright.

These deer are a menace! Think of the children!!!
