Would you replace a stolen bike with the same model?

After reading some 'stolen' threads, I got to thinking. If your bike were stolen (or one of your bikes, if you have several), would you replace it with the same model, or something different? Maybe a beater, or even a more expensive model? Or would you not replace it at all?

I would.

I ride a Trek Soho 1.0 and love it. Works perfectly for what I do: 4.5 mile ride each way to work on winding, twisting, hilly (and sometimes bumpy) bike paths.

I've only had my bike about a month.. judging from that month of use, I would get the same thing. I love it.

I really love both my bikes, but I'd probably get something different just for variety. On the other hand, about seven years ago my favorite car I've ever owned was stolen (a 2000 Civic Si) and ever since I've regretted not having replaced it with the same thing.

Depends.. if it's a good/personal bike, then yeah. But otherwise, it's an excuse to upgrade!

For example, I would try to get a similar commuter bike to mine, since it's been personally modified to death. My road bike, of course, can always be replaced by a much better steed.

Definitely a more updated model. I would end up with indexed shifting and shift levers somewhere other than on the down tube.

You know, I wonder how my insurance would work. Since I've only owned it a couple weeks, I'd get it paid for by American Express (90-day theft/damage insurance is free); But if it was stolen at home, I wonder if AMX AND my homeowners policy would each pay up. That'd be sweet.

Then I'd upgrade for sure.

A long time ago my parents bought me an mtb (actually, they bought me a whole bunch of bikes as I was growing up. Thanks mom/dad if you ever read BF) and got insurance with it. After a few months (the bike was £200 around late 80s) the bike was stolen.

It was replaced with an identical model for just £11 excess.

I'd probably get something fancier as my excess is low and I'd most likely get another cx bike even if it was my mtb that was stolen. Or maybe I would go mad and have a custom steel audax frame made for me.

I would get the exact same bike, just to show the thief they had little actual impact on me.

Well let's see... I have a Trek 4300 which I love but I don't ride trails (don't have any) so I probably wouldn't buy that again unless I'm living somewhere with MTB trails, singletrack, etc.

My Trek 610 is great but that said it's a classic and would be too much trouble to replace, especially finding one in the condition mine is in.

So I'd probably get a lugged steel frame, and build it up with good road components (read: Campy), and then for a second bike I'd get a Trek Portland or a 7.blah FX. Or those Scott bikes that are like the 7.blah FXes. The P 4 or whatever.

When my hybrid was stolen, I didn't replace it. I had two other bikes and had outgrown the concept of a hybrid. I was already looking for a good home for it.

If my Trek 1000 were to be stolen, I'd be really sad since it was a rescue bike. But I'd replace it with something both nicer (read: lots o' carbon) and with a slightly less aggressive geometry. Even though it's a blast to ride, I can only ride it for 40 or 50 miles at a time.

If my Trek Portland were stolen, I'd replace it and every mod and upgrade I've made to it, and every accessory I've added to it, part-for-part. It is such a perfect match for me, my riding style and my riding environment that it's hard to conceive of anything better suited for my daily ride, commuter and grocery-getter. Anything lesser wouldn't be worth owning, let alone riding.

Specialized Tricross expert double would be replaced before the ink was dry on the police report.

Specialized Roubaix... uhm... does my insurance cover any of this?..... gee, I really don't do that much go fast road biking......isn't there anything a little less expensive? Damn that thief, I really liked the bike, but don't ever want to fork over that much again!

Jamis Aurora. Yes, unless I was about to do some serious self supported long distance touring, and then I might consider spending more. But if I didn't feel like spending more, then the Aurora needs to be replaced.

Schwinn 700 hybrid - what, its missing? Damn, I am out a $10 lock !

Right now, I have the one bike, no car, so replacement is essential; however, EXACT replacement is not. If something different/better is available, I'll grab it.

For example, if my $1800 Dakar XLT gets stolen, I've seen a $900 Dakota 29er that would work for me. This particular example would be impossible to replace exactly, anyway -- a custom build, I picked all the parts myself, and the frame is unavailable.

i have two bikes
an old heavy 35lbs steal mtb.
a new entry level road bike, hasa r4

if the mtb was stolen i wouldn't be that mad. i spent 40bucks on it at goodwill and it got me to school and back for almost two years. i supose i might replace it with a cheap garage sale mtb/hybrid bike if i really needed a beater bike.

my hasa, got it a week ago. its nothing amazing, but its 20lbs and i love climbing hills with it, moreso going downhill, but i would probably buy an upgraded bike. maybe a jamis venture comp, or a cheap carbon bike, or try to build somthing under $1500, i spent $430 on my hasa, love the STI and carbon fork

either way i'd get a better lock. i'm using a kyronite lock, safety lvl 8, and a cable lock for the front wheel. i should get another u lock for the front, maybe soemthing smaller and lighter. i'd hate to carry more than 5lbs of locks. but for a 1500 dollar bike i'd carry two of the fargetabout it locks from kyptonite, or the chain one and the big yellow one. lol @ 15lbs of locks.

edit. on second thought i'd replace it with this baby. and you better belive i'll put aero bars on it too.

I only have one bike and it's pretty much my only form of transportation, so I'd be pretty sad if it were stolen. I have an LHT, and it works well for me. I'd replace it with another LHT without hesitation, only I'd get a compact double instead of a triple crank; for some reason, the triple crank requires frequent tweaking of the rear derailleur, I'm not sure why.

All bikes are built from parts that are constantly changing with fashions/costs, so what is this 'same model' you speak of?

Similar story here. My hybrid had served its purpose and gotten me back into riding, but I was looking to move on when it was stolen. (The first time I rode it to work, too!) I replaced it with a salvage road bike from Working Bikes in Chicago. Thousands of miles and a few more salvage bikes later, I have formed fairly strong opinions about what I like and don't like in a bike, and just put together a Milwaukee "Orange One." I'd replace it in a heartbeat.

I would upgrade. My commuter bike now is an early 2000's entry level Iron Horse that I've converted over, slowly. I'd like to get a newer bike now with slightly better components, but then I remember that part of the reason I commute by bike is to save money, and the IH does the job just fine.
