Internally geared hubs?

In general and Shimano 7-speed in particular... Could someone point me to good source or briefly explain what are dos and dont's with them from a rider's perespective?
Can I shift anytime, or should I stop pedalling for that? (shifting while pedalling makes quite loud "bang"...)
How often it needs to be checked over?
Any other things I should know?

You can shift whenever you want, but if you're pedaling hard, you'll need to let up a bit.

As for servicing, Shimano uses a special oil, and you can screw things up if you use the wrong one. I'd take it to a shop. But they rarely need attention, other than the occasional cable adjustment. In ten years, I might think about having mine looked over.

I've got 4200 miles on my Shimano Nexus 7 speed and haven't done any maintenance. I've ridden through 3 winters with it. I replaced my chain, but that was it.

If you let up when shifting you shouldn't hear any "banging" of gears.

I would have it regreased every year or two though and have the bearings changed at the same time.

They don't require much maintenance but they do require at least some.
