Vulcan blood not clotting while eating Goats Head Soup
Guys,
I live in goat head country and as they say - 'tis the season. For years slime has been my goat head proofing. I find it works great for me. I pull the ugly buggers out and laugh when I see that little green dot on my fully fully inflated tire.
Lately, however, I've gone down to 1.25" tires and have had to make my own presta Slime tubes. The problem is the slime doesn't seem be clotting anymore. After switching to the skinnier tires I started out with no slime, figured out that wasn't going to work. Made my own Slime tubes and didn't have a problem for a month or so. Now all of a sudden I'm getting flats left and right. On the one I did last night, a significant amount of slime had squirted out of a pin size hole but it didn't stop the leak.
Any ideas why the Slime quit clotting?
Thanks,
Chris

I am assuming you are running higher pressures now? If so that is the reason or the slime is old.
I use TrueGoo instead as it seems to work better at high pressures

Hmm.....I'll have to try that. Yeah, I'm running a lot higher pressures. Slime is fresh. I did the first (all full of holes already) with old slime and found that didn't work. It doesn't seem to be clotting with slow leaks (that spend a significant time at low pressures) either, though.......

true goo works great but don't let it get into your floor pumps head! On mine, it caused the head valve to stick...a lot. Finally had to soak it in hot water for awhile before it worked right again.
Goat heads are coming into season already?
great.

ah, goatheads, the scourge of the west. they don't seem to bother with my 700X23s. but then I never really try to fun over them directly. there's several plants scattered along my route. ****ers. when I had a Mtn bike I went off the road for like 2 feet and when I got back on the road my tire was studded with them.

Hell, I've been getting them all summer on the Paco Sanchez trail. I dunno if they were left over from last year or what. The West Corridor Light Rail construction has forced me to ride off the pavement in a few places. But yeah, I think they are coming into season now. D'oh!

Still, the slime saved me having to patch it on the road.

I used slime for the last 2 years on my mtb. I pretty much had to ditch tubes after a month and if I was lucky 2 months. I haven't slimed my new high pressure road tires yet because I hated having green sh*t all over my bike and inside my pump. I think I'm going to try the slime tire liners though.

Hey, somebody gets it!
My latest joy is a tire with a mind of its own. I patched the non-sealing homemade slime tube. Held air just fine overnight and into work yesterday. Then softened up the first three hours of work and stopped at that. Pumped it up for the ride home and now it seems to be holding. Really gives me a warm-fuzzy feeling!

My bike came with factory Slime tubes, and for whatever reason, I've NEVER seen Slime work. It's never saved me from a single flat no matter how tiny the hole. All it's ever done for me is to make a mess that I have to clean up before I can patch the tube.

Any of you goat head lovers ever consider making a sweeper attachment? Run some rods or dowels off the front of your fork to just in front of the tire and mount a small, stiff brush there. Set it up so it just skims the road and is at a slight angle. Might sweep the stickers out of your way.

I've used Slime for years on my tires. I've found that it actually works better on punctures/holes that are larger than thorns, than on all the tiny punctures goatheads tend to give. For example, it'll patch a nail puncture great, but you'll have a million slow leaks.
I've abandoned the tire slime in favor of Mr Tuffy liners and thorn resistant tires. Makes for a bit more resistance, but my legs can use the exercise. Be sure and cut them to length, too, or you get a bit of wobble due to overlapping material.

The pre-filled MTB slime tubes work great for me. I've seen it handle 10+ goats at once. I haven't gotten a single flat since using them except when I've let the bike sit all winter and the slime dried out. It's just not working on my skinny, high pressure home-filled tubes.

Is that what those little f'ers are called? I call them "bane of my existence." The tires on the BOB stroller and the Burley kid trailer are absolute magnets for them. I even put the thorn barrier plastic strips between the tube and tires on the Burley, but they still get through. Grrrr....
As for slime, my wife's bike came with slimed tires, which I guess are okay -- still has a slow leak, however, which I should get around to fixing soon.
