Looking for a lock -- emphasis on convenience
I'm looking for a lock that is very simple to use -- i.e. slide something into place, click, and go, key or short combination to unlock. Just something to disable the bike so someone can't *ride* it away.
I have about a 5 minute 'commute' that I'll be doing several times a day for the near future. The place I leave my bike is a very low theft risk -- I have left it many times completely free of any lock, etc, with no problems, but this makes me uncomfortable.
I would prefer not to carry a heavy cable lock, or floppy U lock, and then spend 5 minutes messing with it every time I travel. I'm just interested in a deterrent that takes a minimum of effort, annoyance, or time to use.
Does such a product exist?
Thanks

I have a small cable lock that I got from my LBS, it has about a 1/4" braided steel cable.
The main purpose of using it is to keep the my bike from getting blown over in heavy winds and I guess it might deter and underachieving thief. It packs away very tightly when not in use so it not to big a deal to keep it around. I could even wrap it around my seatpost very easily because it wants to stay in a coiled shape.

In Europe a really common lock is one that is mounted on the seat stays and has a bar that swings through the wheel to prevent the wheel from turning. Hard to find in the US. Sounds like what you are looking for.

I would have to completely agree, that lock is one of the quintessential bike locks, and if you added up the value of all the bikes that people use that lock on, you will find that that lock is protecting more $$ than any other bike lock.

Thanks very much for the replies. I really like the look of the frame locks from AXA and ABUS -- just about exactly what I had in mind.

If you always park in the same place, leave the lock locked to the rack when you go home.

Anyone know any place that imports those? I could have a friend bring one from the UK I suppose.

Axa Defender RL at Clever Cycles in Portland
They're out of stock at the moment though. It looks like it'd be cheaper to find a UK store that exports anyhow. Found one on eBay.
Now this is cool:
Axa Developing Remote Controlled Defender Ring Lock
I'm going to stick with my Kryptonite lock for now but that AXA lock does look very convenient, especially with the chain option.

some of the AXA-Basta locks are being carried by J&B wholesale, many bike shops use J&B for product - but last time i looked they only had the rudimentary pillar lock and not the spring loaded ring locks.
But a hearty plus one for the ring locks...... very convenient. had one on a town bike, parked it outside a shop, watched a thief try to ride off..... he had the most quizzical look on his face as the bike just would not roll....

If convenience is what you want then look for a ring lock with a plugin system and a chain that goes with it.
I will have 20 of them with the plugin option for sale soon. I am finalizing my import deal and will have many "dutch" products available.
