Mentally dealing with knee injury

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm a ~200 mile/week rider diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans and have been told to take 6-8 weeks off the bike to see if it'll heal. I've only made it through 1 week and it's mentally killing me. The weather is perfect, and I'm stuck having to drive to work and not do any fun weekend rides. How do I deal with the next 5 weeks?

I took up swimming as a outlet when a torn hamstring kept me off the bike for the better part of 4 months this year. It helped some but it was poor substitute.

Just keep thinking of all the great rides you can have when healed. Seriously, maybe plan a big ride for month or so after you're healthy. Something you've not done before - car-free weekend trip? Research it and plan it out while you are down, train for it when you get back. ...

Excellent advice!

I can tell that it's extra smart to take care of your knees. Metal replacements , such as I have,
don't work anywhere near as well as the knees God made for you!

Suck it up, basically. That's in the nature of injury and rehab. Fail to do so, and you get a nice chronic injury. Pick something else to do with your time -- can't ride the bike? Maybe it's time to learn all you ever wanted to know about wrenching the bike. Or play fantasy football, whatever. Physical exercise within the limitations of your doctor -- swimming is a possibility, but clear it with your doctor first.

Might be a good time for a new bike. Get something beat and cheap off Craigslist and start fixing it up?or build from scratch if you have a little pocket change? At least you could dream about riding and you'd have an even better return to cycling when you're healed.
