Both bikes are fine for the price, though if it were me I'd probably get the Trek; sharply sloping top tubes offend me for some reason. Regardless of which bike you get, though, replace the grip shifters with trigger shifters of some kind as soon as you can. Grip shifters are a pain, especially when you're hammering your way up a hill, grab the handlebar a bit too tightly, and accidentally shift into a gear you didn't want to be in.

I also think that, in a fairly short time, if you commute regularly, you'll probably outgrow either one of these bikes, so you're wise to buy them used.

What kind of frame is the first one? What are your expectations? Are you looking at a MT. bike frame for a reason? How far is your commute?

Those two bikes are not comparable IMO. The rock hopper looks like a fun commuter for very short rides.

I personally would prefer a faster road style bike. I also like single speeds!

I'd go with the Specialized. It's a higher-end bike, yet cheaper. I'd actually disagree with Bragi— these bikes could very well meet your needs for a while with road tires. Specialized saddles in that design have been kind to my taint, as well.

One question— do you know if these bikes fit you? That's the most important consideration.

The Rockhopper was actually about the same price point in the day. There's very little to pull me one way or the other. Get the one that fits you best.

i'm looking at mtbs because for some reason the only kind of road bikes on here are really old ones... i know that i am buying a used but i would like it to hopefully be not scratched much if not at all... my commute would actually range from 15-40 miles a day... wide range... if i could find a nice looking road bike for about 100-130 then i can afford it...

is specialized really a higher end bike?... because the rockhopper new is only about 3 hundred something to 5 something... then trek is about the same isnt it?... still cant decide yet because i got a used giant before for 70... nice frame but a bit small and gotta use too much energy to ride n keep up with my dad's trek 800 2006... thanks for the advice every1... but still cant decide... lil more help plz?

If you intend to cover that kind of mileage on your commute, you definitely need to get road tires. In fact, you should consider something with drop bars, a road or cross or touring bike. Riding upright into a headwind is doable for 2-3 miles, but for 10, it's kind of arduous.

+1. I once considered buying an otherwise junk used bikes just for that saddle.

I'd vote for the specialized as well, assuming it fits. I've never had problems with grip shifters (have one on my swobo currently)... I haven't had a problem with accidentally shifting...but then again, if it's something you do have a problem with, it's a relatively easy fix.

I'm a big Specialized fan, especially of the older frames. That Rockhopper is old.
