So, do I still bike commute? I've lost my voice.

Suffering from acute laryngitis . Can't speak a lick... feel perfectly fine otherwise.

Do I still bike commute the 12 miles to work in the cool mornings and back home in the warm
afternoons? Or do I not?

Dr. Joe

Got one of those Ask-a-Nurse hotlines? Check there. From my layperson's knowledge though, unless you have to shout a lot on your commute, you should be fine.

Do you have to talk at work?
If so, call in sick and skip the commute.
If not, enjoy the ride.

I will lose my voice from time to time from yelling. My job is pretty intense on my voice since I am doing a lot of yelling and talking but my body is perfectly fine otherwise.

I say if you feel fine then stay on the bike. If you are feeling worn out and fatigued then chances are there might be something else going on and should get it checked out.

Dude..
If I can still ride with my lovely issue you can keep riding.
Every time I engage in a normal activity (generally performed 20 min after waking up) I am in excruciating pain.
....fissures suck.

Two weeks ago I came down with a cold, which lead to a sinus infection and a cough. Haven't missed a day of riding to work. Last Tuesday I towed a canoe 20 miles to fish my way ~10 miles and take out somewhere else, then load up the canoe on the trailer for a 10 mile ride home. I think the exercise helps me recover faster.

Should you do that? I don't know. That's between you and your doctor.

I got hoarse last week for a few days and started to get the same concern. Then, I got better. I still get a little hoarse if I'm peddling for a long period of time, but it seems like a little while back indoors and I feel okay again.

As long as your middle fingers still work, laryngitis shouldn't stop you from commuting!

I used to think that people who say they completely lost their voice were sort of faking it. I thought they could speak if the wanted to, but it might hurt a little or something.

And then one day it happened to me. It's a truly bizarre feeling to try to yell out loud and nothing comes out. Like you, I felt perfectly fine otherwise, and still went into work.

I say, go ride your bike!

In general, I follow the neck approach. If my problem is from the neck up, I ride. Anything below the neck or body wide, I don't.

Sounds like you ride.

You could 'sign' in sick, or even 'smoke signal' in sick. 'Morse code' in sick?

Medical advice from the net... you get what you pay for. Of course, that means I need to chime in. I'd ride, but I'd worry about wind drying out my throat. Keep your throat moist, lotsa water. Tea with honey when you get to the end of the ride (that's just tea is awesome).

I teach physics for a living. Gotta use the voice everyday to lecture. Haven't yet figured out
how I'm gonna manage my classes today.

I'm giving the larynx a day off from the bike ride as I wussied out today . Back on the bike
tomorrow.
