workplace discrimination thread: has your boss tried to stop/hinder you from riding?
my old employer did, dumping all the driving errands on me in an attempt to get me to stop riding that unfortunately worked for a few months.
wouldn't be surprised if the rash of vandalism directed at my bike in my last few weeks there was one of them too. not saying it was because theres no way I'll ever know that for sure but I wouldn't be surprised.
I can't have been alone... let's hear those war stories!

My current boss asked around for me to make sure I could use the cut through into our property from the bike path. He said he wished he lived close enough to ride.

I never heard of anything like that. My previous boss wouldn't let me park my bike in the office. After she left, I brought the bike in and nobody has said anything since. We're fixing to get lot's of new employees and the office may get crowded so I'll see what comes next.

Not safe for work
I now work from home -- my commute is 30 seconds. But, my last job about half of the workers biked to work and the employer was very supportive. They supplied a bike room, showers, lockers and tools to repair bikes.

Yeah, no...
I had an unexpected meeting at another campus when I commuted in on bike that day. My leadership team worked hard to get me on the company vehicle insurance list so that I could take a company vehicle to the meeting. This was without my asking, I was going to ride my bike and was making jokes about being sweaty at the meeting.

No, but she does seem nervous about my riding.
Any time we're discussing Business Continuity or Disaster Recovery a comment about me being hit on my bike always sneaks in. It's not like I'm irreplaceable, but it would have a significant impact on the company.
Were an employer or boss voice a negative opinion of my riding I would start looking for another job.

My boss' son is a big rider and I think he works on bike lights, still trying to get free demos.

Did he pay for mileage when you drove on the errands?
I have done several work related errands and even environmental site investigations on a bicycle.

I've never heard of anyone so petty that they'd do something like that or make a point of forcing you to drive just so they didn't have to feel guilty about their own lack of exercise. That's amazing.

My employers are incredibly supportive - they often tell me how great they think it is that I commute and how much they admire me, especially when I come in on a really wet day. I'm sorry to hear that you're not so lucky.

My bosses only complaint about my bicycle commuting is he looks fatter next to me now that I lost 35lb since Feb.
I'm on the company insurance and I have company vehicles I drive...in fact thats a big part of my job is driving across the state to pick up and drop off equipment to the people I support.
The people I work with have been very supportive. Restricted access building and I park my bike in a back corner of the lobby out of the way. I could park it in my Cube if I wanted. I could put it on a pallet and put it on the top of the pallet racks if I wanted to keep it safe. LOL.

In an actual disaster, it seems that evacuating cars could clog the roads, or be less able to get through damaged areas, than a bike rider.

My employer wouldn't ever say anything negative about biking to work and in fact, we can add 10 min to our vacation time for each day we bike, carpool, or take public transportation to work. However, they weren't too pleased with me breaking my arm skateboarding a pool at age 39! (It took me 30+ years of doing it to finally break something skating...)

That would never happen at my workplace though since pretty close to 100% of employees would qualify. (It makes no sense at all to drive into the Boston proper, so almost everyone takes public transportation.)

No workplace anti-bicycle stuff for me. The VP of my department at work is an occasional bicycle commuter. Most days that he doesn't bike commute, he motor scooter commutes. The VP of FINANCE ($$$) is also a frequent bike rider and occasional commuter. With some of the head honchos as FOBs (friends of bicyclists) it helps us lowly employees that are daily bike commuters. We have enclosed assigned bike lockers available and a locker room with showers (about 30 feet from the entrance door leading to the bike lockers!). Makes for a near ideal bike commute arrangement with minimal "transition time" from bike to work. Make friends with the financial honchos at work, if you tell them about the tax breaks for setting up bike lockers and bike parking facilities, you might be surprised that they will consider it. Here in California, it also helps large employers companies score points with the state Air Quality Resource Board. CA has mandates for all companies with large number of employees at one site to encourage alternate commute transportation.

My boss is completely supportive. She keeps asking me how long I'm going to commute in the dark in the morning, and how long I think I can hold out as it gets colder. She's absolutely behind anyone at work who is into physical exercise, good nutrition, and who wants to be "green" in general. No problems here.

So many people started riding where I work that they built a special bike cage to park your bike so it wouldn't get messed with by passersby throughout the day. Some of the top executives are big into cycling, even if they don't actually commute on them, so cycling gets pretty supported there.
Of course, I work for a large multi-specialty medical clinic, so the leadership is a bunch of doctors who are very aware of the health benefits. I also get to see a lot of nice bikes that I cannot afford

I bike commute 3 miles to employer provided shuttle bus. The University is very proactively pushing transport alternatives. The county is forcing them (no new building permits) to build more parking garages if they can't control the number of cars on campus. The University has multiple building projects underway that will increase traffic on campus. The county is concerned. Bikes are a great alternative of course. There are city buses and trains circulating near campus. The University is also subsidizing purchases of bikes and related safety equipment (helmet, lights, locks) for all staff, faculty and students at one of the LBS. They have also installed more bike racks in more locations all around campus. Showers are available at the Gym and also in many buildings around campus and the University hospital where I work. My boss is bike neutral. If it's not golf or football it's not interesting to him. He was very worried about my recent bike accident on my commute home from the shuttle bus. I'll live but it was scary to say the least. As soon as my bike gets back from the shop I'll be commuting again. I use Zipcars if I have to go off campus. There are 4-5 Zipcar stops on campus and more all over the city. I sold one car and now only drive my wife's car occasionally. She has the more challenging 2.5 mile commute and will not ride a bike or walk in the awful traffic her direction. So my employer is very positively engaged.
