Commuting and Fasty Wheelsets for Same Bike?

My 9 pound commuting/touring wheelset is great for riding in all conditions and carrying loads without having to worry about anything, but I wonder if a second wheelset for weekend joy rides optimized for speed would be worth it? Would it feel significantly faster? Anyone have two wheelsets for this same purpose? I have a 700c touring bike with 9 spd mountain drivetrain.

Absolutely. Heavy wheels suck unless you need them. I'd say you only need a heavy wheelset if you are heavy or are carrying a heavy load (i.e. touring). Else lighter=better.

you might have to readjust the brakes everytime you swap the wheels since heavy duty rims are usually wider than lighter ones.

I find this to be the case, but fortunately the centering seems to remain stable and it only takes a minute for me to tweak the barrel adjuster.

My commuting wheels are the Salsa Delgado Cross with Tiagra hubs that came stock on my Casseroll. They are heavy and quite bombproof. My "go-fast" wheels are Mavic Open Pros on Ultegra Hubs. Not the lightest wheels by a long shot, but I do notice a difference.

Also treat your fast wheels to a low rolling resistance tire. I like Conti GP4000s.
