Commuter Pics.
This is the temporary span over the Fore River on Quincy/Weymouth line on Rte 3A.
The USS Salem was built at the Quincy Yard for the Pacific War. I has air conditioning
that was powered by STEAM. The decks were made of oak and had to be holystoned.

I'd paint a comma on after walk, so when I get caught riding I could say that it's for walking and biking.

The Quincy Ferry heading out and a really bad picture of "Goliath". I have been told that it
is the second largest crane in the US. It is being dismantled and sent to Romania.

The bridge lifts straight up to let oil tankers through. There is a bike path that swings out
under the bridge to a water treatment plant on a small peninsula where you can sit at a
table, have lunch and enjoy the view of the Fore river meeting Boston Harbor. Of course this
knuclehead didn't take a friggin picture. As this path is relatively unkown to most people.

That's still pretty common on ships and anyplace else that has steam (like universities, hospitals, wastewater treatment plants).
Generally it's an absorption refrigerator - put in steam and get out cold water (little more complicated than that).
We had both absorbers and compression chillers on my submarine and we had to know them inside and out.

I have read a little about steam powerplants and it seems like such a great art that has been diminished.
I worked as a fitter at the Quincy yard for a year. Building Ro Ro ships. Roll on Roll off.
A 29 year old iron worker was killed just trying to dismantle one leg. The company was blamed for
taking dangerous shortcuts on Goliath.

This path goes east from the bridge to a water plant where the Fore River
flows into Boston Harbor. Most of the rec boats are allready gone.
My first big hill heading to Boston in the back ground.(16 miles)

I wish my commute was interesting or pretty. My commute is a little "ugly" I try to look for the beauty though and be optimistic.

That's the only part of the commute that looks suburban. The rest of it is urban.
A friend parks his family bikes in the front yard all summer.

Thanks for posting these! I don't travel much, and I'm always curious about the other places people live.
I'm sure everyone thinks this, but I never post pics because I feel like my commute is boring, or nothing interesting for other folks to see.

I haven't put up any pictures of the urban side of the commute.
My commute once brought me through Bostons' big dig.
One section along Atlantic Ave. allways had steam coming out of the street.
Combine steam with winter dark,red/yellow caution lights of big
ambigous shapes of construction vehicles in a fog setting.
It looked liked the gates of hell. I didn't even want to stop to
take pictures.

16 miles, it could be shorter, I prefer to use as many sidestreets as I can.
Avoid the major arteries and people on cell phones. I guess I was never
important or such a great conversationalist that I needed to be on a
cell phone all the time.

Good bye Goliath. Sad to see you going to Romania, so they can ship more
garbage goods over here.
