First night video of my commute.
I thought my video making would end with the early darkness, but not so. After a few tries, I figured out how much street light was needed and how to tweak the editing for brightness. All but the most darkened backstreets look fine. A little gainy but watchable.
This weeks Hit Man stop sign runner inspired me to wear the camera at night too. Not that I would have used the video against that guy, I just want to see and hear what happend for my own entertainment.
https://www.vimeo.com/2043075
Details on the camera setup, cause I know someone is gonna ask:

Who is the rider in the vid.
No helmet. No Lights, No reflectors, riding in Door Zone, Dark jacket?
Thanks

Thanks Joey. I may spend some time looking into a helmet cam. The video has some of the
fascination of Nascar. Where some people go to watch a racer wipe out!

And isn't there an "Ignore" feature here at BF? I have never used it, but I heard about it. I find everyone here entertaining - that's why I bother coming here in the first place.

Awesome video Joey! I think we need more story on that other rider though. Where you messing with him or was he really keeping up with you? It was cool to watch him though. It would be a great training video to point out mistakes he made.
I really like to watch the shadows on the right side at 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
Keep up the good work Joey and keep posting videos.
speeding up the film on the more "boring" parts and then slowing down on other parts might be cool for future reference. Thanks for the entertainment!

Cool. Thanks. I want to make some too. Is the other guy a friend or someone you see regularly on your commute? Been looking at a GoPro helmet cam. Anyone know anything about them?

Cool vid but it's only a matter of time before you get seriously F'd up riding like that, if you haven't already.

some of us enjoy seeing where and how other people ride. Pretty easy to not watch the video if it's something you don't enjoy.
I think riding a bike is a cool way to get to know a city. Short of getting to ride there myself I love seeing the streets of New Orleans from the perspective of this rider.
So the other rider in the video- is he just a random rider who went along for the ride or was that someone you knew?

Bikes: Raleigh Chiltern 3 speed, Pioneer Venture GT 27 speed tourer, Carrera Subway 8. Sadly I don't like the Pioneer, which though I've had it for over a year, has only been ridden three times, and is still in brand new condition, with the blue grease on

Hey Joeybike,
Great video, would't it be just fantastic if we could all cyle through the night to the musical accompaniment of the great Jimi Hendrix and his " Voodoo Child ," awesome. By the way, who was that guy, cycling ahead of you? Who just would not let you pass, and had no lights whatsoever.

Joey,
Another question about the guy in front of you in that video: For a while it looked like you were really riding pretty close to his rear wheel. Were you really that close, or is that just an artifact of the camera and camera angle?

Do you turn it down a notch while riding at night?
Not sure if you do or I'm just getting used to your crazy riding.
Anyway, I'd like to put in a request.
How 'bout a ride in a downpour to SRV's couldn't stand the weather.

I thought this video was really cool. Not sure why everyone is giving the guy a hard time. For guys like me who dont get a glimpse of New Orleans at night on a bike, this is really interesting.

Wow! Lots of legit responses! Sorry it took so long to respond - I was out of town for the weekend away from computers.
He is a friend of mine. I met him at work to test out my camera after dark with a rider in the picture. He had to wait up for me once as I got blocked by traffic, then I had to wait up once as something slowed him down.
He is riding a Jamis Exile 29er single speed. He's pretty fast on that thing.
Yes, the shadows are a very cool byproduct of night riding. I like the ones as the credits are rolling too.
Thanks for the Kudos and the ideas.
Me too. Then BF could have a special heading for movie producers too!
Yeah Yeah.
The helmet mount makes it look slower than reality. Mounted on my bars looks more realistic without speeding up. I have two vids with the camera on the bars. Click my sigpic and look for the two vids labeled as handle bar tests.
Yes, I could do with some Hendrix pumping through the air on my commutes.
My bud forgot his lights. He usually runs at least blinkies on both ends. Vids with other riders are so much more interesting. He is also the rider in my vid NOLA 29er. Find it through my sigpic.
Did you notice his pants light up when he got in line with my 30 watt NightSun?
I'm sure I ride pretty close at times, otherwise he will hit a "one man" gap in traffic then have to wait up for me if I don't catch the same gap.
No, but I do turn it down with a rider in the picture. Especially my fixie and 1-speed buds. This vid was edited to x1.25 speed. His pedaling would look very very fast if I bumped it up more than that. By myself, I could go x1.50 before the action and pedestrians start to look incorrect. I often go x1.66 when alone so I can fit more footage in less time but the peds look unnatural.
I'll see what I can do about your request. Will PM you if it happens.

Just a heads up.
Last year, just before Christmas, one of my buds put a camcorder on his helmet and twisted my arm to be in his first test vid at night through NOLA with all of the Christmas lights on Canal Street. It came out pretty good. And I get to "star" in it, instead of wearing the camera.
I am wearing a white shirt.

I posted this vid link here last December and got trashed for a dozen pages at least! Maybe someone can find the original post. It was a lot of fun!

joey ,are you artificially inflating the speed of your commute again? so, so......
what are we supposed to be enthralled with again?
good on you though for videoing New Orleans, can you go ride some of the outlying areas, maybe out of your parish so we can see how you ride a different street environment? many of us have our regular routes 'dialed in' and you appear to be no different.
