Please help with handlebars on a Trek Soho

Now that I understand tires, it's time to move on to the handlebars.

I love the raised stem and bars of the Navigator-type bikes (the comfort bikes) and am looking for a more upright position.

This is the Trek Soho in stock form:

What I'd like to do is have a more upright seating position for my commute, for two reasons:

1. I ride 3.5 miles exclusively on bike paths that twist and turn, go up and down, and have smooth and rough surfaces, so I rarely get the opportunity to build up speed. Therefore, efficiency isn't much of a priority compared to comfort.

2. I can go the dirt-road path (carved out by the electric company for their trucks) to work and (most of the year) the dirt roads are hard-packed and easy to navigate. It's 2.5 miles. Again, I can't hunker down and get efficient speed, so comfort should take priority.

What I'm trying to ask is: what's the best way to lift my handlebar profile using a new stem and handlebars, without the bike looking Frankensteined?

Any suggestions are appreciated, since I know little about bike parts.

Basically I want a new stem and handlebars, but have no idea where to start.

Thanks, as always.

What about using an adjustable stem?:

You could check out these custom stems, get one that has a high angle and right height:

Your local Trek dealer will have a selection of stems. They will probably swap the original out for one that meets your needs for free. Bars may be differant, more labor etc...
