What I did so far was buy some DA 7700 STI's new stem and bars, repaint the frame (masked off the decals), new cables and saddle, waiting on the right rack and fenders to come along at my Co-Op

@rekon i really like both of those bikes. I have a road bike have never commuted on it. I want to some day.

what size tires are on the Motobecane? I have a fantom CX and am wondering how wide of tires I could run.
either way it looks sharp... Did you remove the stickers?

I agree Sci Guy awesome rebuild. How do you like the bullhorn handlebars? I wish i could find an old steel frame to build up.

I wish I had ordered the 40cm instead of the 42cm, and I wish the reach from the bend to the ends where the brakes are was a little shorter. But otherwise I'm liking them. It's my first time using bullhorns, so I'm still getting used to it - just think I will replace them with a smaller version in the future.

Just added a bunch of stuff to my Trek 7100 for a bike tour. Now my bike is better equipped to commute so I plan to start commuting soon too.

Thanks for the compliments @RidingMatthew! :) I bought the Fantom CX used and the guy that owned it prior said when he ordered it from bikesdirect and that they messed up and sent it without decals. Looks a little plain to me but eh whatever...

The tires are 40c. I contacted bikesdirect and they said 42c width will fit on the fantom. However I personally think 40c is the real threshold because my tires BARLEY have enough clearance!

Careful. I bought a Fantom CX frame from Bike Island with this knowledge and turns out those frames can only take about 35c. I was bummed.

Both made by me in my garage. I highly recommend fat tires like 38s for commuting.

I've never gone bigger than 32s with fenders on my CX.

Yeah I was hoping to put in some conti speed rides (42c but actually 38c measured) and they were nowhere near close to fitting. apparently the frame on Bike Island is not exactly the same as the BD one. I probably should have asked first but when they're labeled as the same thing I just assumed...

Here is my all purpose bike. 2000 Specialized M2 Pro Stumpjumper. Originally owned by a serious XC rider who was two inches shorter than me. So I had to raise the stem (adjustable) and used a trekking bar. I have two sets of wheels: one with mountain tires and the other (pictured) with Specialized Fatboy 26x1.25 slicks. It is an incredibly light and fast bike. I actually added a little weight to it because I replaced the flat carbon handlebar with the trekking bar and added a rear seatstay Greenfield kickstand.

I will add a seatpost rear rack. The one I have won't fir the 30.9 mm seatpost so I have one on order.

In the summer, I use this mostly to go to the tennis courts. A couple bottles of water on the bike and a backpack for the rackets, balls, etc. I actually used tennis grips to tape the handlebar.

i like the bike with no stickers on it. It looks a little more stealth and faster :) I wish I could find a bike shop that seemed to really understand bike commuting versus road riding or mountain biking. I think it is great that they have their niche that they are interested in but I really would like to know what size tires I can run on my current bike/ wheelset. I want a place to let me fiddle around without having to purchase tires that may or may not fit.

I test road a Salsa Vaya (shop employees bike in Blacksburg, VA) and she was running 700 X38 and it felt as fast mine but nice and comfy considering I just road around the parking lot. She would have let me ride it for an hour the next day if I had wanted. <that is flat out awesome!


I bought mine from Bikes direct and I wish they put something in the write up. They did with some bikes but not this one. I think I would like to try some 32-35 and see how they feel. especially for winter riding.


but all that to say I truly like my 700X 28 Michelin city tires they are fast on the road 15.8- 16 avg mph for a 11 mile one way commute most days. I just think I would like something in the winter.

A re-post from another sub-forum, but it is the only bike I own and I commute on it. So here goes nothing.
It's the latest rendition of my Felt QX75 (2009) hybrid. It used to be a flatbar (stock), then I convert to trekking bar, and now it's a dropbar hybrid. Some in the hybrid sub-forum might feel it is no longer appropriate there coz now it looks more like a road or CX bike. Well, it maybe time to move on. Really enjoying the dropbar, with more possible hand positions and more aggressive posture for faster rides.

Added a Ibera large frame bag, changed bars to a riser vs my j-bars, got a new pannier Seattle Sports Fast Pak, and put my old Ergon grips back on.

I would love to have a folder I am not sure i would commute on it but I would love to have one.


is that a fat bike? why does the front look so much larger than rear? what size are the tires?

It is a "fat front" which uses a fat bike front fork that the A to C is about the same as any 29er fork so no real changes in ride.

I like the fork as it has a ton of mounts for bottle cages racks and anything else you can think of. Ideally I would like to get another 29er wheel with a big apple and build it up for the front and sell the front wheel. It rolls smooth but it is heavy.

The front tire is 26x4 and the rear is 29x2.35, with the front tire size it equals out to be the same diameter as a 29er tire.
