Hebie chainglider. I got it from Urbane Cyclist in Canada through their website. It rides on top of the entire drivetrain. Works pretty well but adds a bit of drag and makes a faint noise. There are a few threads around here about them.

Someone here on the forum claims to have bought a boatload and is going to start selling them in the states. Would be a good idea to wait to see if the prices on his site pan out and are real. Mine ended up costing $90 with shipping

I'm just judging halogen lights based on the specs on websites. No one aroud here stocks them so I can't really shop them. Also, I've read too many warnings about how you can damage the light when the bulb burns out. I'm assuming that if I can wait a couple months and get a bulb thats twice as bright and has a bulb with tens of thousands of hours of runtime I'd be doing myself a favor. The thought of pulling over to change a bulb in the wrong neighborhood doesn't appeal to me either. If I'm going to spend $175 for a wheel to power the light, I want the best light I can get.

Built up a bike today from the "junk" pile at work ( I work at a bike shop ) to use as a beater for errand running and extended locking out of my sight. Also Beast of Burden missions like trailering my other bikes.

It's an old (maybe five years old) Jamis Explorer from our rental fleet that fell onto hard times needing a few components and such. I changed the stem angle, bars, tires, and saddle, besides the repairs. I have under 200 bucks in it but it is still fun to ride anytime.

I just finished the rough build up of my new rain bike...

Since I already have a Kuwahara Cascade that has been converted to a fixed gear I know just
how great a frameset and bike they are... it's a mtb that was designed for epic touring so it has slack angles and long stays that contribute
to giving the bike a stellar ride.

The beautiful lugged frames were handbuilt from Ishiwata quad butted tubing and used Tange forks.

So I was at the shop a few weeks ago and re-painted frame got dropped off as a donation and as soon
as I saw the K on the seatstay and the braze on for the pump I knew this was a Cascade... imagine my surprise and joy when I found that the
rear stays had been cold set to accomodate a 3 speed hub.

So the other night I found a Shimano 3 speed hub that had been laced to a Mavic double walled rim and decided that it was time to build myself a new
rain bike / commuter with that Cascade frameset.

My old Raleigh 3 speed hybrid donated it's stem, bars, and brake levers and then I had to scrounge around to find a crank and chainring and some
cantis for the front...the rear u-brake was stil intact and I settled on a Shimano crank with a 42 tooth Biopace chainring.

I'm still missing the fenders and have to touch up the paint but I think she's looking pretty good after a few hours of work.

As was expected the ride is superb and I was really surprised by how well the bike handled on the Kenda 26 by 1.5 slicks and the bike is also
much faster than I expected it to be... the 3 speed is as smooth as silk and runs a really nice gear range that I have yet to figure out. All I know
is that she climbs like a goat and is a screamer on the straightaways.

When all was said and done my cost was a whopping $0.00 as I traded in a perfect set of SA wheels with an AW hub and dynahub and a nice road frame... the SA wheels will be going on a Raleigh Ladies rod brake roadster that I am restoring and rebuilding for sale at the co-op and the road bike will become a fixed gear (also for the co-op) as soon as I bring in the spare wheelset I have in my shop at home.

The bikes I build for the shop should fetch some good money.

Hebie Chainglider and you're right, it is nearly completely weatherproof. The only drawbacks to it is that because of how it "glides" on the chain, it creates slight noise as mentioned already. I've found though that tire noise drowns it out, even with slicks.

I rolled my new 3 speed into my favourite LBS and the head mechanic who is a genius with bikes and one of the only people I'd trust my own bikes with, recognized the frame and said he was responsible for the excellent frame modifications.

After 60 km of riding I can say I am really pleased with the new triple.

The new old three speed with it's new (recycled) fenders and new lights... I stopped by MEC and they just brought in a new 3 light LED that is powered by a hand cranked dynamo so now I don't have to worry about my batteries dying because I forgot to charge them up.





It only figures that now that the new rain bike is pretty much complete that we get nothing but sunshine.

I'm not going to complain as the bike works when it's dry too.

Donna - It's really amazing what you can do with a bunch of recycled parts and this recycled bicycle thing makes me pretty happy... making them keeps me out of trouble and there's a lot of satisfaction in saving nice old bikes and giving them a new lease on life.

I am quite pleased with how the bike turned out and like the blue and silver thing that's going on and I think the burgundy will have to go.

My other Kuwie has a blue and silver thing going on too.

Me very much likes. Ever since I bought my folder with a 3speed, I dont think I want another bike with out on!!

I think I'm alot like you Fiver, I would rather be on a bike I rebuilt out of "junk" then a $1,000 new off the rack bike. Especially if I was paying for it, lol. I just hate to see usefull things thrown away.

Moose - I love internal gear hubs and if that Shimano 333 ever buys the farm I'll replace it with a Nexus 7.

I also have a 3 speed folder (a Phillips Twenty) and a Raleigh Superbe 3 spd and was thinking the folder would be a great bike for towing my trailer since it's been re-geared with a lower range and those 20 inch wheels really dial up quickly.

I think it would also fit in the trailer...

You people with your "winter" bikes. I kinda wish Texas would get nasty once in a while so I'd have an excuse for commuting on my Karate Monkey 29er. As it is my fixed gear racer and commuter get me by all year long.

livewire, I was getting kinda jelous of everyone else getting to have a "winter bike". I think I might build one and use it any time the temperture here gets below 50 or so. I think I will be skipping the studded tires though since it hasnt snowed in florida since 1989 I think.

My Sorrento fared last winter in KC just fine without studs. That includes skating-rink black ice, 18" deep snow drifts and all sorts of gooey, muddy slush

I love winter.
