I use a Wald medium sized basket (137?). It is held down with zip ties and I use a cargo net on top.
I do not recommend the Gamoh porteur rack at all. As I said I have two and I have broken two brackets that hold it onto the brake bold/fork crown. After the first one broke I put the a toe strap around the rack and my head tube in case. I am glad I did as the second one broke and the strap held it up. Do a Google search on Gamoh rack and broken and you will find others. This isn't a one of occurrence. The first break scared the crap out of me, when my rack pivoted down and was acting like a snow plow. Lucky I didn't crash.
The other thing I don't like is how high it sits up over the front wheel. There is no need for that and gets in the way of cables etc. The Velo Orange sits much lower and the Pass and Stow in my opinion is perfect. That is going to be my next purchase, a Pass and Stow Porteur rack.

I can't call it a commuter bike, but I went a few places on it Sunday, through city streets and along the bike path. The streets were snowy, and the bike path was very icy. I fell twice in the ice and switched back to the street.
One could commute on it.

Here's mine. Slow and steady upgrades to an 80s step-through Nishiki road bike frame that my family overhauled for me because they rock. She needs a new derailleur, and I'm in the process of getting a new seat.

Pretty cool. Although you should get some red cable housing; if you ever take the panniers off, the red bar tape would look arbitrary against the all-black background. (although looking closer, I guess that is a red bottle cage too?)

It has a red bottle cage, yes. 
It's not an urgent purchase right now, but when I have some extra funds for gussying up my bike, I'll probably get some red cable housing.

My newly finished "back-up" commuter which is currently my primary as the kuwie has decided it needs to be completely rebuilt. So on that note be ready for a new and improved kuwahara.
specialized hardrock single speed, all outfitted for commuting of course. I managed to find the right gearing to get chain tension perfect, I have an uphill ride in to work so I wanted it low enough gearing to climb with bags in it, but high enough to be able to cruise with a fairly low cadence.

Since this pic I have moved the stem up one spacer, but flipped it down. Looks much better, I think. Also it will be getting a rack and (hopefully) trunk bag fairly soon. Already have the seat post clamp sitting at the LBS with rack attachments on it.

What I'm currently riding. 1987ish Nishiki Cascade. I picked this up off CL for camping. I added fenders and a Soma Oxford bar. I like the riding posture with this bar so much that I've been riding this everywhere.

Yeah, you're right. I don't often see it from this angle so I wasn't aware of the bad fender feng shui. Got to fix that this weekend.
The guy I bought it from had two bikes - this and a nearly identical 87 Trek MTB and wanted $80 each. I was really only interested in this one. They were rideable but in less than perfect condition (needed new cables, brake pads, bearings repacked, new saddle, etc) and I really didn't need another project at the time, so I told him I'd just decline the opportunity. It really wasn't about the price...until he offered me both bikes for $80.
So my reluctance to get one project netted me two projects. SWMBO laughed at me (which is all I can really hope for when it comes to acquiring bikes), but they've both turned out great. (And SWMBO now really likes her aqua blue 87 Trek, albeit mainly for the big fat cushy seat that I find aesthetically abominable.)
