NYC Commuters- what are conditions like on the Hudson River Greenway today?

I was out of town all weekend and didn't get to check out conditions on the Greenway.Anyone travel it this weekend and can report on conditions? I'm thinking about riding to work tomorrow, but only if it's passable (my only bike, a folder, has 16" wheels so I'm not going to be riding on an unplowed path...)

It's passable from 158 down to Battery Park. There are a lot of ice patches, but most of it isn't the treacherous kind, and there's a lot of bare pavement. I had to walk a few feet three or four times, mostly above the boat basin.

Did you ride above 158th on your way home? I did last week before the snow and it was ok, but i can only assume the ice will be horrendous near the construction zone. They must have busted a water main, because it was wet and muddy all around there.

Not since Friday night. As of then, the greenway stopped being rideable at the Little Red Lighthouse, so I had to walk it from there to 181st, where I could ride again. I don't know what it was like between 181st and Dyckman.

My assumption, judging from the ride in today, is that it won't be possible to deal with a bike uptown of the lighthouse this evening. All the ice on the hills that didn't get plowed Friday will be tromped-down, uneven, and slick.

Probably best to wait till after Wednesday then. The rain and higher temps should clear things up. Sucks though, I can't scope it out in the daylight when the path is closed for construction.

IME, the Greenway's switchback just north of the GWB is the last place in NYC to get salted or otherwise de-iced. So I agree with a poster above, wait a few days, or use Riverside or some other alternate. I played it safe, after a fashion, riding down to 59th this AM on Riverside + West End. Had lovely exchange with a guy who tried to kill me (said wanted to try... <sigh>). So yeah, "safe", haha. The WillyB was my undoing, though.

It's impassable above the lighthouse tonight. I had to backtrack to 158th.

I didn't even bother. After taking the subway (L) from Bklyn to 6th Ave I rode up the Greenway tonight and headed straight for the 158th St. exit. It felt like there was a lot of freshly frozen snowmelt around after 72nd St or so. I had to be quite careful on the skinny roadbike tires a bunch of times.

I was fine most of the way, but where the path turns left toward the water, right after Riverbank State Park and before the Dominican party stretch, there was a really wicked patch right near the bollards, where I guess the plows can't get through.

How do you get up to 158th? The pedestrian/wheelchair switchback ramp?

Weather's calling for rain and above freezing temps all day/night tomorrow. Hopefully will be cleared up soon...

I may join a group ride on Thursday morning, assuming its not canceled. I believe they'll travel up the greenway and into Jersey, so if I go for it, I'll report back on the trail's status.

Yup, walked that one. Not sure what's so complicated about a shovel, a bag of salt and a plastic cup, though.

Ha! Never! I get out of the saddle and hammer up the car ramp.

Anybody know what it's like today?

Also interested in conditions on the GW and River Road down to Edgewater.

The usual patch near those bollards at 145th, otherwise pretty clear.

Any idea if that detour is still in effect?

I went for a ride in Central Park yesterday, and had planned to take the greenway down there. Unfortunately the section of the path starting at Dyckman street was completely unpassable. Ended up taking broadway all the way.

I should have been more specific: Pretty clear from 158th to Battery Park. I don't know about 159th and up.

But you at least have Broadway to 158th to the greenway as an option.

thats what i figured. guess i'll just stuck with the usual detour until the weather is all cleared up...

frankly, the ride up/down Broadway was pretty challenging. Some nice climbs/descents:

In the past I've encountered snow and ice on that section north of the bridge as late as April. More snow tomorrow isn't going to help. My guess is they can't get a plow up there, and even if they can, there's no room to turn it around, and no way out, once they've reached Dyckman.

Yeah, there isn't much room to get past the overpass, even with a snow blower. Any volunteers want to build one of these: https://www-bdnew.fnal.gov/pbar/organ...Bike_Plow.html
