Anybody ever put mustache bars on a MTB. I was advised last night that doing so would let me keep my shifters and brake levers but still get some additional hand positions like drops.

The other option are trekking bars, which I think would give you even more hand positions, although they lack the style of the mustache. I say this as someone who has a Bridgestone XO-2 with mustache and a mountain bike with trekking. I think the trekking bars are better and are cheaper. Nashbar has their house brand in black and Wallbike has the Kalloy brand in silver.

I wanted to put mustache bars on my breezer (all mtb components), but I couldn't find any made with the right diameter for my shift and brake levers. I ended up going with trekking bars that I set up like mustache's are -- brake levers up front and no tilt to the bars. I have been quite happy with them that way and I find them to look almost as cool as the mustache bars would have looked.

I've got twist shifters, can I snake those on all around all those curves of the trekking bar?

No. You'll have to run them on the ends on the bars.

Bar-end shifters and road levers are the best option for 'stache bars.

I've seen a few mtb's with moustache bars. You can use them with mtb brakes and shifters. However, they are far more enjoyable if you run bar-end shifters and find some old non-aero road brake levers.

I run Albatross bars on my mountain bike with mountain bike brakes and bar end shifters. Works great.

To clarify: There are two major handlebar diameters (not the stem clamp area): 22.2mm for MTB, 23.8mm for road.

True moustache are 23.8mm, so generally won't work with the saller MTB brakes/shifters. There are similar bars, like the Albatross mentioned above, that are meant for MTB parts (but they fit best at the ends).

There's two bars that Velo-Orange offers which will fit MTB shifters/levers:

The Tourist and The Milan. They're not moustache bars; The Milan is a city/cruiser type bar, and the Tourist is like a porteur bar.
I'm putting a set of the Tourists on my MTB/utility bike conversion so my shifters/levers aren't anywhere near a large cargo load when I put on the CETMA front rack.

Genuine moustache bars like the Nitto come in both road and mountain stem diameters (just the sleeves are different between the two). However, the bars themselves are not compatible with mtb levers. You must use road components.

You can get a few different hand positions, including a fairly aero forward position, while keeping your shifters and brakes, with a pair of Jeff Jones XC bars.
