More information is needed. Flat course? Prevaling winds? With or against the rotation of the earth? Size of the recumbent riders beard? All these things add up.

The recumbent's advantage is strictly aero, plus being able to push as much as desired on the pedals without being lifted off, correct?

ISTM that aero advantage goes away on the tandem; the addition of the extra rider shouldn't add significantly to the drag of that bike, at least, not nearly as much as is gained by having a 2nd engine.

However, I assume I'm wrong or they'd be setting human-powered land-speed records on tandems instead of fairing covered bents. Maybe there's an upper limit to the effect.
