Big Thighs = Ripped Crotch in Pants
The more and more I ride, the bigger my thighs get, and the smaller my waist gets. I can't get pants that fit. I swing my leg over the top tube.....and rip goes the crotch of my pants. I'm constantly sewing the crotch of all my pants. Thankfully Thrift Store pants are only a couple of bucks, but someday the rip may put me in an embarrassing position.

You can get cycling pants/shorts that are not made of lycra. They will probably work better.
Look in the MTB section.

Okay, so...the pants you're wearing are ripping...and you don't want to wear bike shorts...and you don't want anything else because you're "not really the gear/consumer type"...so just what kind of help were you looking for anyway? I'm not a fan of mindless consumerism either, but the gear you've got doesn't work. You can either get something that does, or you can do without, but if you choose Door Number Two, don't expect those pants to magically heal themselves and become functional.

Why don't you just dip your bike low so you can swing your leg over the frame instead of hoisting it in a crotch-tightening/ripping move? (Ie-- grab the stem of the bike with your left hand, tilt it towards you and as you bend your left knee a bit, you should be able to swing your right leg over the back wheel and top tube at a much more gradual angle. Short of that... wear shorts?

One reason I switched to clipless and lycra. I originally found bikes tough on non specific bike gear.. Worn out soles on tennis shoes, worn out crotches in regular pants. Plus, water blisters.. I really can't imagine how one could get into really top form bike shape without the use of designated bike gear.. Before you'd get into bike shape, I am sure your *** would be grass.

I like the idea of the gusseted crotch. I'll try to sew those into my pants.
Fighting the urge to over consume can reach a threshold which more consumption is done...correct, but grabbing the first fix of buy buy buy isn't always necessary. That's why I brought the question to the forum....to brainstorm a bit. Thanks for the ideas.

It's all riding. What one wears is unimportant as long as the rider is comfortable. A day on the bike deserves more than just a Bud.?.

I'm still pondering the premise....
Is the big thigh thing really in play here? Unless you've put on 12" per tree trunk, methinks the raised leg thing (+/- smaller waisted pants) has got to be a primary driver.
Perhaps if you & cyclezealot work up a raging beer habit and ratchet the waistline back up...

^.. It's only relevant Bob, in that I too can relate to having once had the habit of riding in my favorite Docker shorts and got tired of riping the seams of non cycling pants.

Actually, I think there is much more to it than just being comfortable. If that were the case, wouldn't we all be taking the much more comfortable way to work, in our SUV, indirectly killing as many innocent Iraqui women and children with the fuel to get us there? So more than just my personal comfort, is a global responsibility. I personally am willing to sacrifice my comfort, if that means not over consuming and not buying the latest and greatest technologies. If we as a community, can come up with another alternative to the quick easy fix of consumption, by using our creative minds, that's my choice. And the folks around my office will just have to put up with seeing my danglers all day through my split pants.
