Breaking Wind

Looking for some recommendations on a wind breaker / jacket. I don't really need it to keep me warm, looking more for wind resistance and breathability (still don't understand how an article of clothing can be both wind resistant and breathable.) Also, it needs to be able to fold up and be stored in my jersey back pocket.

Thanks

It can't. Take it from someone who spends 7+ hours at a time riding in the rain. You can have a breathable garment, but it will eventually soak through. You can have a waterproof garment, but you'll sweat like a hog inside of it.

Showers Pass gear gets high marks from the touring and randonneuring crowd for both fit and overall function, but even so, after hours and hours of pouring rain I've heard people wearing SP gear complain that even their super-awesome storm jacket is just drenched through.

If you just need some wind protection, check out a windstopper vest.

At first, I thought this was about something else.....

I wear a C9 by Champion runners cold weather jacket thing. I'd link but I can't find it on their online store. Not sure if it is what you are looking for, but it does what I need which is similar to what you are looking for. My arms get cold, but not uncomfortably cold and it breathes really well. The vents go down the arm and are in the wake. It can be "folded" very small as well.

Not sure if it is what you are looking for, but there are other styles that are more form fitting.

I have a Showers Pass "Elite 2.0" jacket. It is allegedly both waterproof and breathable, but it seems to lean more towards waterproof. Of course, this means I must open the vents to avoid overheating, and open vents is rather counter to waterproofing.

Anyway, I loves my Showers Pass jacket. I've tried several jackets here in the lovely Pacific NorthWET, and it's by far the best I've found so far.

I just bought a J+G cycle wear windbreaker last week and wore it on a ride the very day I got it. I really like it. It has huge pit zips so that helps get rid of built up sweat. It was pretty cool and a bit breezy and it performed like a champ. Be advised they are roomy. I bought a large and was afraid it was going to be too small since most cycling clothing is cut too *&^%$# small for my liking, I could have bought a medium and would have had enough room. I'm gonna keep it though cause I don't mind it being a bit big. I think I'm going to buy a pair of their waterproof breatheable rain pants. I have a pair of Showers pass that are too small for me. Heck they were too small even before I put on a few pounds. I never wore them at all. Took them out of the package and tried them on. If anyone wants them PM me I'll give ya a good deal. Well in my mind I'll give you a good deal.

Pit zips, vented backs, and any adjustments on waist/sleeve tightness are all ways to make your windbreaker breathable.

My jacket has never stopped me from breaking wind before, I don't see what the problem is?

I have broken wind in the past and will again. I wouldn't say it's breathable though.

Seriously, I have a Bell Weather jacket with removable sleeves that works really well. I can unzip the front a little or a lot depending on what my temperature inside is. I can also unzip or completely remove the sleeves too. It isn't made to resist rain but the OP didn't mention that. I don't know if it would fit in my jersey pocket since I don't wear one but it does fold up pretty small. I guess it would depend on how big the pocket is.

I like my J&G, very comfortable. My wife got me a Canari and I like that one too. It doesn't have pit zips, but the sleeves are removable and it all rolls up and fits in its own back pocket (very clever idea). Neither one provides much in the way of rain protection, but they're great for wind.

Thats all I wanted was a windbreaker. My Burley is great for the rain and colder weather but above about 50 degrees its too heavy.

I have a Canari, I can't for the life of me remember the style. The cut number, according to the tag, is 53405. It is bright yellow (if you swing that way), has zippered side and rear pocket and zip-off sleeves. No zippered pits, but it has back vents. It is warm when it is cold and comfortable to wear when it is warmer. I really like it.

Edit: found what it is called. It is the Eclipse. Link at REI: https://www.rei.com/product/713690

I have a Sugoi Venture jacket. It works well, folds up small and cost around $40...

I just wear a polypropylene long sleeve t-shirt, it sheds off enough of the wind that I don't get too cold, and it wicks sweat and breaths. Its not perfect so I definitely get cold sometimes, when that happens I just pedal harder.

I have a GoLite windshirt that I use running in light rain or heavy rain in warm temps (just to shed the water), but I'd rather use polyproplyene or capeline shirts to keep the wind off.

These are not breathable.

My GoLite is older than these, so not identical to either of them - it's a pullover with a hood. It weighs 4 oz. and folds down to about the size of my fist.

Two of these are similar to mine, and are as light or lighter (the hoodless one is 3 oz.).

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I ended up getting a this and I think it will work out good.

Now I don't have to strain so much as I try to break wind.

Nice stuff all but I'm a pocket freak and I couldn't deal with a jacket with no pocket in the front. Thats the main reason I got the J+G. I had ordered the eclipse from Sierra Trading Post for a great deal but it was too small and they didn't have the next size up in Killer Green and I didn't feel like paying REI 70.00 bucks for it. I'm really happy with the J+ G but be advised they are roomy for sure and I could have bought a size smaller but I'm keeping it. Check my listing in buy and sell for some Showerspass rainpants

Um, the OP said "wind resistant and breathable", not "waterproof and breathable".

Even if its not advertised as a quote unquote wind resistant and breatheable if there are pit zips and a back vent its going to help get rid up moisture "ie" sweat. The air around you inside the jacket must move or else you are going to sweat and get soaked from the inside. Most of the so called breatheable fabrics have venting to get rid of the inside moisture. The waterproof breatheable stuff like my Burley is too heavy for warmer weather riding thats why I like the J+G windbreaker.
