"You're not a car..."

"...Get off the f**king road!" That was my first really negative experience commuting this season. I'm in downtown Lansing, mid-morning yesterday. I'm on South Washington headed from the copy shop, past the roundabout at Michigan Ave., going absolutely just as fast as the car just ahead of me, not impeding traffic. Everybody's got to drive slowly there because of the bobtail parking on both sides of the road. Some jack*ff yells at me. Oh, and he's driving crazy, too. Racing up on me, jamming the brakes. Prick.

This is one of only a handful to negative experiences bike commuting I've had in the three years (well, this is the third year). Just thought I'd share. It feels good to rant. You're welcome to do so, too.

Better to keep in inside you and bury it down deep so it festers into a bubbling ball of hate.

That sucks. Sometimes it pays to smile and wave like you know em'.

I can never find the original post, but someone here on BF has the greatest pwnage response to "You're not a car" ever. It went something like this:

Stopped at a gas station, driver filling tank looks over at cyclist and says, "You're not a car, you know."

"You're right, I'm a motorcycle."

<Driver looks at bicycle disdainfully>"Where's your engine?"

"You're talking to it."

Motorist: You're not a car.

Cyclist: Yes I am.

Motorist: (puzzled look)

If that ever happens to me. Here's my plan.

Motorist: You're not a car!

Me: What?

Motorist: You're not a car!

Me: What?

Motorist: You're not a car!

Me: Hold on. I can't hear you? Let me turn the motor off.

you are correct:

vehicles don't have Rights
People have Rights

You are not a car. Please quit pretending to be one and obstructing their rightful use of the roadways.
You give all cyclists a bad name.

In Mi, cyclists have a legal right to the road and 1 lane of traffic and most people do not know this but that is the law.

There was a whole thread of replies to "you're not a car". My favorite was to mimick rolling down a car window and ask "what?".

I hate that coming up behind me irate knucklehead scenario.

Once, long ago when I was young, the same thing happened to me. I moved left to get away from his front bumper, essentially splitting lanes. As he roared up next to me I used my right hand to push off (see my avatar) of his left-front quarter which gave me enough speed to pass the car in front of me. I promptly ran the next red light and for all I know he is still sitting there on HIS road.

About once every 6 months someone will do that to me still. I don't push off anymore tho.

Cars are our future...the sooner you wussies give up childish things and grow up, the happier and safer you will be.

Stop in the middle of the road, get off the bike, walk around it scratching your head, and finally turn to him and say "Wow! You're absolutely right! Thanks!"

My usual response is "sidewalks are for pedestrians", which never fails to render them speechless for a few seconds as their lizard brains try to process that statement, only for them to reply with "yeah ... well ... uh, **** you!" and speed off. These are not terribly bright people we are dealing with here.

Carry eggs and fling them at their windshields. You're right, I'm not a car, I'm an A-hole so don't mess with me.

NO! Peanut butter makes as much sense as "your not a car". It sounds offensive and leaves people baffled. Any more I tend to find humor in peoples dumb founded anger and peanut butter is funny. LOTS of anger in Detroit!

Yea I wish I could find a way to educate people to this but in Detroit the police don't even know. If you get hit by a car here on your bike, you are at fault for being in the road!
