Budget frame

Hi,

I am looking for a frameset for commuting.

Looking for something in road/touring/cyclocross type style. Steel or aluminum. Braze ons for downtube shifters. Rear rack eyelets. Size 46cm to 48cm.

The Surly LHT or Cross Check fit the bill but are a little expesive for leaving the bike locked up on the street. Are there any other budget frames that would fit this description?

Thanks.

Try craigslist, there are always some good old school steel road frames on there. Those usually fit the bill for commuter pretty well. Thats what my winter/backup commuter is.

From what I have been reading about the Pake, it sounds like its pretty heavy because of the lower quality tubing used.

Anyone know of any aluminum frames that fit my needs?

Ebay.

If you're on a budget, trying to buy new is not smart.

If I were on a tight budget, I'd try to pick up an older steel bike from the 80s. Framesets seem like a nice way to get what you want, where cost is not a factor. If you do have some parts lying around and insist on buying just a frame, eBay is a good source of older framesets, but you may be look at $150 or more.

Another possibility is local Craigslist, your local bike co-op... or maybe garage sales?

I just got this touring frame/fork with canti mounts (fast shipping) on their deal of the day. Normal price is $199 and they have discounted shipping this week. You could also get a 10% from the sale forum.
It seems reasonably light and well built. It will take the wider 700c wheels, a non integrated headset (threaded). There are brazeon's and mount points everywhere. I like the metalic green paint.

Good Luck.

For $200, I wouldn't be worrying about the weight of a frame. The Pake C'Mute is a bargain and could be built up as a reasonably light bike with the right components.

Although you are certain to get many suggestions to buy used, it often can be difficult finding a used bike in decent condition in the right size. You also could spend a lot of money swapping components or doing repairs. Also, the fixed-gear fad has made it much harder to find decent older steel bikes for good prices.

Seriously, take another look at the Pake. It would make a fantastic commuter.

The C'Mute is a cool frame... Outside Outfitters has the matching cro-mo fork for like 60 bucks.

I would assume 29, not much less than the next largest size.

Nashbar sells a variety of frame types under its house brand. I cannot speak for their quality. But they seem okay. And pretty cheap.

Interesting. Do you know the geometry numbers for that frame?

Actually no, but you should write the shop owner, I think he designs the frames himself and get them done in Taiwan. I've been riding this frame for a few weeks and I really like it.

Ask in the ISO thread in the C&V forum... Someone in your area may have a suitable frame they may be willing to let go of if they know it won't be hacked for a fixie. Every once in a while people need to thin their herds.

They are using butted Tange 4130. I think it's pretty similar to what Surly is using. If you want a lighter steel frame, maybe you should look at the Soma Double Cross?

RE: Pake, if you commute in winter the limit is 35 width tires, might be too small for snow. The LHT can run 700x42 studded snows with fenders and I can put a 54-622 on the front w/o fenders. Room for fat tires is good option to have on a frame.
