Computer to the Commuter?
I'm just curious as to how many of you add a computer to your commuter and if you think that it's a good thing to have or not... some people prefer having speeds and distances ect.- or do you prefer the simplistic approach?

I have one. I like knowing my speed (really fun on the many downhills, somewhat depressing on the many uphills), and I like having a timer. My only regret now is that I didn't get the model that had the outside temperature, but oh well.

I used to run a Garmin on the dash, I quit this pulled it this winter. I just felt like I was always competing with myself to get more miles or ride faster, but this winter when my computer went on the fritz, I decided to go without and haven't looked back.
I am just a commuter, I ride on the weekends, but just for pleasure. I am not training for anything, just riding to ride or to get around.

I have one. I upgraded to one with cadence a few years ago, but later I put on a simpler one. I have a Planet Bike Protege 9, which I got just because temperature is kind of interesting.
All I really use it for is to see how long the commute took, and for the odometer so I have an idea how many miles I have on tires, chains, etc.

I had a simple computer on my old bike, but since I got my new one I have been too lazy to switch it over. I find that I really enjoy not having it there because now I worry a lot less about my speed/top average speed, and just enjoy riding.

Nope. I use the copy function of my Sporttracks to record the distance and time, also gives me the totals should I need them. I'm commuting on a bike that has the necessary to roll fast and come to a halt ... eventually. Keep it simple

Call me a data junkie, I love the numbers so I ride with a Garmin 305 and hope to move to the 705 one day. I analyze everything about the ride, time, elevation, heart rate, speed.. pretty much anything I can.

An odometer would be cool but I keep the bars clean and I ride in town here so I know my speed but not my miles.

I have three bikes I switch between. My "main" bike which I do shopping and longer travelling with, I have a computer on it. I like seeing how many kilometres I put on in a trip. Also nice to see the average speed I go after I get home.

Have a computer on every bike. I use them to determine over time (with a log) if I'm getting stronger or faster at this stuff. I'm not

It is a must. Until I had it I was spinning too slowly, always in the wrong gear. With the computer I see how I can ride faster by spinning faster in the correct gear. The temperature is also very important as I document what to wear in what temperatures. I have this one which only costs $10 plus qualifies for free shipping

Several reasons for having a computer on my commuters:
1. Nice to know how fast I'm going.
2. Nice knowing how far I've come and How far I have to go.
3. On my Cateye Astrale equipped bikes I can monitor my cadence.
4. I can use it to track maintenance like a car.

Had one on each bike for years. Batteries died in both and haven't bothered replacing them and its' been more enjoyable. For commuting, I've got 3 routes I can take and I'm familiar with them enough that there's nothing a computer is going to tell me that would be different than any other day or just by looking at my watch.

There is something aesthetically pleasing about a totally uncluttered "dashboard", but the utility and fun of a computer is more than worth it to me.

I'll be the first to admit they're completely unnecessary, but i almost never ride without.
