Whatever happened to the car free Mom?
She sold her Mom-mobile and bought a bike, trailer and sidecar a while ago. She had a few posts about living car free, and then disappeared. How's it going now?

Hi all. Sorry I've been totally MIA. Things are going well with the commuting overall. My back has been hurting, but I've been finding that extra crunches seem to be helping with that. Anyone else have good core exercises they can recommend?
I've been pleasantly surprised by the addictive quality to cycling. It's the one time of day where I really have my thoughts to myself and I get a lot of "work" done. Very nice.
But yes, been busy with the blog and fundraising for my trip to Ethiopia (see blog) and also starting up a worm breeding business. Busy busy busy! Check out the blog here if you haven't seen it: https://www.mamadoesgood.com

For the crunches, concentrate on pushing your lower back down, rather than on pulling your chest up. Then do some to either side. Toss something kind've heavy on your bed and hook your legs under it, lay over the edge of the bed face-down, and lift yourself up to look up. Lean from side to side, twist to look behind you. Whether those are specifically where you ache I don't know, but it should add some extra areas of focus.

Someone asked me about worm vs. regular composting in a private message, but their account won't let me respond. So a quick and unrelated-to-biking answer here is that composting with worms happens much more quickly and (mostly) without bad smells. Also, many people believe the compost is higher quality.

some core:
lie on your back and then lift your legs up to 90 degrees and put them down - almost to the ground - and then repeat

Pilates. Get some good instruction, though. With any of these core exercises here, if you do it incorrectly you can hurt your back. Be particularly careful with those leg-lift ones.

For my money, yoga is the best routine I have ever used for core strengthening. Holding the poses for a good long time builds strength and increases flexibility and range of motion.
