I was off today, but was glad to see two commuters about 15 minutes apart booking down my street tonight in the snow, well lit, and otherwise geared up. Good motivation!

The ride to work was a nice 60 Degrees and with a good tailwind...Still soggy from last nights sprinkle so I was in and out of the bike lane to dodge puddles.. ..Got off work about an hour early so the ride home had a bit more traffic than im used to but drivers were curtious. Tomarrows ride is forcasted for 49 Degrees and a 10 mph headwind..

The ride in: Light rain and very mild on the way to school today. Wind at my back. Passing the huge lineup of cars waiting to get into the parking lot on my way to the deserted bike racks. Utopia.
The ride home: Rain stopped but much colder. Tried to upshift but no gears. Resisted urge to kick derailleur, dismounted, removed ice from shifter cable, continued with sticky but serviceable gears. Wind in my face. Horribly underdressed for the cold. Head pounding, heart racing, snot running, and chest heaving upon arrival at home. Utopia.

Easy ride in at 28 F ( -2 C ). I already miss the warm day yesterday, but the temps are still mild, so no complaints.

Temps in the 60s F both ways yesterday, but it was freakin' windy with gusts in the 30s. I carried a bag on my front rack, which I usually don't do, to hold extra gear and the wind was moving me around. Today is much cooler and hopefully less windy. I'm trying to top 600 miles this month, which I've never done in a January before, but a snow/ice storm that is brewing for late in the week might foil my plans.

Mid 30sF and a bit of a headwind this morning. Dry though.
I needed outriggers for the ride home yesterday. Inches-deep standing water in a few places. Not really a problem though. I just went slowly to avoid soaking my feet. Pouring rain. Most of the MUP snow and ice was gone this morning. Unfortunately, what ice is left is really treacherous, even with studs.
Bizarre cager interaction leaving work yesterday, too. I got to a red light. No cars in sight on my road, but lots of cross traffic, so I zipped over and clicked the pedestrian crossing button. I rode back into the street to wait for the light to turn. As I was doing this, a woman was approaching on my street, maybe 50 yards away at this point, and she lays on the horn for some reason. I position myself normally, then turn around and look at her as she stops behind me. She's mouthing something. I give her a wry smile and wave her around me. She's got her right turn signal on and I've left lots of room for right turning traffic. She keeps mouthing something like "no" or "go", scowling and gesticulating. I wave her through again, but she just sits there like the Queen of Dorks doing nothing. I just turned back around to face forward and shook my head. The light turned green a few seconds later, and we parted ways.

The battle of four wheeled vehicles versus pedestrians continues in the City of Toronto. I am glad my commute is 100 kilometers away.
"A Toronto woman in her late 30s is the most recent pedestrian victim in a string of deadly collisions that have killed 14 people this month in the GTA.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Davenport Rd. and Symington Ave. when a Dodge Durango hit the woman.
A police investigation concluded that the SUV was travelling north on Symington Ave. when it made a left turn onto Davenport, striking the woman."
The Toronto Star.
Blowing snow this morning at minus two degrees Celsius. Tough ride into a headwind but the studded tires handle the ice yesterdays rain left just nicely.

To the woman that almost doored me as she exited a cab: I was being sarcastic when I said, "Thanks alot!". My voice was dripping with it. It's only because I had gone about 10' before you decided to jump out the cab mid block and in the middle of the street that I was able to wobble my way around the door you pinhead.

Decent weather, but crappy winds. First commute since replacing my old, decrepit chain and cassette Sunday evening. Oh how smooth and quiet a bike can be!!!

Great ride home last night. I was hoping to sneak out a bit early and add a few extra miles to the route home, but got going a little later than I wanted, so that was out. I rode pretty hard going home, aided by a friendly tailwind.
One negative moment - about 1/4 mile from home, a bus has stopped in the opposite lane. Two cars stopped behind it as they should. Car number three - a minivan whose driver I didn't see, but I'm assuming soccer mom on a cell phone - decides there's no time to wait the ten seconds for people to get off the bus and comes way over into my lane. I know the driver hadn't seen me. If I had been taking the whole lane and not riding in the right tire track, I think it would have been a head on collision with a minivan b/c she cleared me by maybe two feet. Not good. I run a 220 lumen flashlight mounted to my handlebars (which was on high power mode at the time) and a front flashing be seen light. Guess I might need a little more, something like a "make them see me" light instead of a "be seen" light. This was along a very well lit street BTW, so even w/o lights I probably should have been visible.
Ride in this morning was fantastic. Cooler than yesterday, but still nice. Made great time and saw lots of geese along the Potomac and on the Mall.

A very pleasant ride in... mostly.
It was 38 degrees with no wind. My usual riding partner had a schedule glitch so I rode alone. I decided to take a different route which cut almost a mile off the ride. When I was nearing my office I spotted another commuter just ahead of me and thought maybe he worked the same place I did. I stood up on an uphill to try to catch him and POP went a spoke. I caught up to him, said Hi, he said Hi back, and he went straight while I turned, so he wasn't a coworker after all.
Except for the broken spoke it was a pretty good ride.
I wore a pedometer and it apparently counts pedal strokes. I zeroed it out before leaving and had nearly 4000 steps in when I got to work.

37F and foggy.
Spectacular clipless flameout this morning. I've never had a clipless-topple ever, and this morning, at the last light before work, I don't even know what happened, I found myself tipping to the left, couldn't clip out, wound up on my left still seated on the bike and my left heel pinned to the pavement by the crankarm, so couldn't really clip out. I had tipped out of the bike lane into the traffic lane, and there was a city bus that stopped, gave me plenty of room. I assume so all the passengers could get up and get a good view. Anyway, I lifted the bike up from between my legs enough to get my left foot out and still made it when the light finally turned green.

Rainy, muddy ride home last night made pumpkin soup taste even better. This morning dry, so I was able to air out my still damp shoes on the way in. Little traffic this a.m., I wonder why.

Wet streets but no precipitation. We may finally have a break in the weather. I was nearly right hooked at 2d Avenue. First time that's happened in awhile but I'm glad the Spidey-sense still works and I was able to slow enough to give myself a buffer.

GAWD it's gorgeous outside. And because of the broken spoke I'm catching a ride home in a car. Dang it.
I hope I can get that rear wheel replaced soon. Until then, it's back to the Raleigh Marathon (aka Dumpster Queen) for commuting duty.

Gotta love DC weather. Yesterday this time near 65 degrees. Today, about a 15mph cold as heck strong headwind and got pelted with sleet and snow. Calling for measurable snowfall Friday.
Pedaled my butt off on the way home. Quads burning, head down giving it about all I had. 117 high cadence, 93 average. Got to the end and looked down.... 12mph average. I feel so lame!

Beautiful weather in Austin today. Cool this morning, but high 60s for the ride home. However, the weather man tells me that's all about to change.

first time post enjoyed lurking for a while...reading all these posts makes me feel like a wuss, here in Okinawa, Japan, a cold day is 12c!
Perfect ride in today, I have a 28km ride across the island for my commute this month. Around the bay as the sunrose at 7am, through town and out and over the range of hills to the east side of the island. Pretty tough climb, 7 degree incline but short, up and over 300m climb then mostly downhll to where I work, hit 62km/h on the way down which was as fast as I want to go on my old school steel framer...Perfect skies out there now, 20c, will do a longer loop home, wind at back for most of the way, what's not to like!

So, we've been through a cold spell. In the past week, I've ridden in headwinds, tailwinds, snow, hail, and just flat out cold. But it is only about a mile away

Fantastic commuting lately. Chilly in morning ~38 or so degrees, up to mid/low 50s in the afternoon. Partly cloudy, no rain, some sun (!), no wind, perhaps some fog in the a.m. tomorrow and strangely light traffic volumes which is a-ok with me. I did get yelled at (after he passed me on a double yellow on a curved 1 block stretch) as I passed a guy when he got stopped by traffic lined up at the stop sign (bike lane was empty - ha!). He told me I wasn't a car. I told him, but yes, I am a vehicle. Then near home some guy literally passed me w/in 6 inches - the smug smirk on his face as I passed HIM at the light after he got caught in traffic was unnerving. Just amazing how petty people are. Looking forward to another nice ride tomorrow and no bike wipe-down needed.

Well, the Dumpster Queen (83 Raleigh Marathon) is ready for the morning commute now that I've put the clip-on fenders and rack back on.
