Surly cross check

I am really really trying to get a Surly Cross check. I need a 54 cm frame and want STI and 105 or better componets. The bike shop did not have anyframes that fit me exactly. I have been to the shop twice, with the money for the bike. They had a long haul trucker equipped exactly how I want my cross check at a certain price but told me my cross check might be much more expensive. Is there some reason the shop might be reluctant to order and build me a new bike just like the ones they have on display? I cant tell wether they dont want to sell me a bike or just make sure they have the exactly what I want. Now they are going to send me an email with an estimate. Again, I wanted it just exactly like the LHT why could they not tell me a price right then? then order the bike. Just wondering if it is just me, sometimes I am too impatient.

Nope, no reason. They can order the bare frame and build it up with whatever parts you want. Some shops are more familiar with build kits than others. Maybe they're concerned you want to be too involved in the build process (pestering the mechanics). If you like the LBS otherwise, you might want to simplify their end by just ordering a bare frame and have them put on the crank and headset you want and then you can do the rest yourself or order parts from on-line.

My bike shop was reluctant to order me a cross check for a couple of visits because they were concerned I was shopping for a bike that wouldn't fit. I was pretty convinced I wanted a 58 cm frame, but I was talked down to a 56 and couldn't be happier.

They may be concerned that you have made up your mind on a bike that isn't the right fit for you. Thats not to say that 54 cm cross check isn't right for you, but I didn't order mine until I test rode the same size I ordered.

Just a thought.

Crosscheck doesn't come with 105. It comes with Sora/Tiagra on junk rims. The LTH comes with better drivetrain and XT rims/BB.

If they're building you a one-off in shop and you've supplied them with the parts list+frame choice and showed them the Benjamins, they're obviously not paying attention.

If you walked into our shop and told my boss what you wanted and had cash, he'd have it done fast. You don't turn away a paying customer with the number of lookielous that come in asking a lot of questions then buying online later.

My guess is that they're afraid they'll order, build, and you won't take delivery. I wish I could get my mitts on a Cross Check or LHT here in Okinawa or I'd have one.

Getting ready to move to the mainland and there's a shop in another town that sells them. Although it's rather expensive. I think JensonUSA told me once when I asked that they'd build me up one the way I wanted (no brifters) and ship it to me no problem. I think this is a cheaper solution and probably the way I'll go someday when I get the itch again.

I have the cash, I was not bickering and I was not acting like a know it all or anything and would even pay in advance. I just wanted a 54 Cross check with 105 componets and STI or brifters or what ever you call it. I told the sales guy I had cash. See, I do think something is up. But they did not try to jump me to another bike or anything. If they dont get reasonable by Wednesday I will look for other shops, even if I have to drive. and why email me an estimate?

Sounds fishy.

Go to a different shop, see if they can get you just the frame.
Go 105 drivetrain and they even make barends in 105 and Ultrega.
You might even be able to get a set of custom wheels built up rather cheap from another shop in the bargain with XT hubs.

They either didn't have the time to quote the whole thing out on the spot, or the person you were talking to didn't have authority to quote at all.

I'd say buy the frame and grouping then make it labor of love project and build it yourself.

The completed crosscheck doesn't have any Sora components.

But yes, the shop is pretty stupid to turn down some business that's just ordering and assembly with no real overhead to sell you on anything.

The QBP book shows it with sora, but you're correct based on data available at surlyville.com.

My bad. It's Tiagra/Deore.

What about... I don't know, if they order a CC frame and put all the parts on it from that LHT, you'd pay for the frame, those parts, and the labor. If CC and LHT frames cost the same, then you could get your CC for the price of that LHT plus labor, which I guess would be an increase, and they'd have an LHT frame leftover.
