Speedplays for an urban commute?

I'm currently using SPD pedals on my commuter. My route is pretty urban, lots of traffic lights, etc. 17 miles each way, and I'm doing about 3 days per week.

I'm considering Speedplays for my road bike, and wondering if I can use them for commuting as well.

Any experiences with this?

Of course you can. They're the easiest things to clip in and out of, but they don't have the recessed cleat design of the SPD's, so walking will be a little harder.

I used speedplay frogs for quite sometime. Just like regular speedplays but you can use mtn bike shoes with the recessed cleat making walking easy peasy. Very easy in/out with all speedplays.

Speedplay Light Actions well too, but they are terrible to walk in. In my case, I only have to walk from the front door to my office, so it isn't too big of a deal.

I wouldn't hesitate to use Speedplays for commuting

I have SPD"s on one bike and Speedplay Light Actions on another and the latter are so much easier to clip into as well as offering much better power transfer. As well, the bigger cleat feels like it spreads the stress over a much larger area of my foot than the spd cleat.

You can use Speedplay road pedals just fine, it's mostly a matter of if you have to do much walking during your ride like if you occasionally get off the bike to use a crosswalk or maybe walk across a pedestrian bridge, that sort of thing. In those situations, the spd's are so much more convenient as walking in road shoes with speedplay cleats is very awkward.

I wouldn't want to spend that much money on pedals for just commuting.

I use Speedplays. They are great at the Velodrome and great on weekend group rides and I didn't want to have to use a different style of pedal on my commute bike. I certainly have to use the coffee caps when I'm walking between the office and the bike rack but otherwise they do fine in ATL traffic. Very easy to clip out in an emergency.

I rock/roll/rub/slay Zeros and they work great. Buy the cleat covers if you have to walk far or across any slick surfaces...

I commute a 36 mile round-trip three to four times a week in the Speedplay Zeros. No problems whatsoever.
If I could just get the wind to be at my back...

I have a set of Speedplay X-2's and once almost fell on my butt as soon as I stepped onto the hardwood floor of my office. Luckily no one saw. I don't use them for commuting anymore.

Uh, why not put SPD's on the road bike? I have spd's on my tri-cross, and Look keo on my road bike. Aside from being more "roadie," I can't say that road bike specific pedals and shoes dramatically change the ride for me. I have some spd shoes that seem just as stiff and effective at spreading the pressure of pedaling around as my keo road shoes.

But if you are like me, and you just like to try different things, then just do it! I find the single sided Look pedals to be acceptable for suburban commuting, now that I have some proficiencey with them. I could only imagine that the dual sided speedplays would be even easier. My local LBS steers people away from speedplays, saying the cleats are too easy to clog up with grit, but I saw positive reviews of them on this thread.
