Moustache bars

Does anyone currently make a bike with them? I know redline did for a couple of seasons on the 925, but I haven't had any luck locating one. Any ideas? I'd love to try them.....I may have to build something.

Nittos are great, and I have a pair on my commuter rig, but if you are just trying out, Soma Fab has less expensive options. Their 3-speed bar is pretty much a classic mustache, and their Junebug is a very shallow, splayed drop, which gives some interesting possibilities. IMO, either would be ideal mated with bar end shifters.

I also like Soma's Sparrow bar, and have one on an i-Motion9 equipped city bike. However, not compatible with bar ends shifters or standard road bike brake levers.

The problem with switching out on my bikes, is that I really love the way they're both set up. I have a line on a vintage Schwinn Super Sport, in lovely baby blue, that I'm considering stripping down and building up as a single speed with moustache bars. I'm trying to picture it in my head. Any one have anything similar as one of their rigs?

Part of my desire to create a vintage piece with the moustache bars is the direct result of the pics of this bike. I love it.

This isn't a single speed but you'll get the idea. These are Nitto bars. Love 'em.

I use this bike for general "around town" riding. I like the bars for riding in the city (San Francisco) because they give me an upright position, better for seeing cars and peds. But they still offer several different hand positions, including being stretched out similar to riding on the hoods of drop bars.

My townie is a first-year Redline 925 with the 'stache bars...it's a great bar for riding around town: the wide ends of the bars are great for getting more leverage for starting from dead stops and if you put your hands in the center by the stem, you get to ride a little higher.

Like the others have said...Nitto and Soma have good options for aftermarket 'stache bars.

I'm going to order the one from nashbar....but I don't know if I want 52cm or 56cm. I'm tall, with fairly long arms, what is the real riding difference?

I seem to remember someone on the forum mentioning that the Nashbar moustache bars are a different material than the Nitto and Soma...but maybe that's my faulty memory. I got the Nittos on my commuter bike and just love them.

One thing we discovered in building my commuter bike (CrossCheck with Xtracycle) is that mt. bike brake handles just don't work on them - only the long-pull road bike brake handles. Sorry that's such a lame description for the brake handles but if you look closely at the Homer Hilson and the other example posted, you'll note the type and location of the brakes. There evidently aren't many choices for brake hood locations on 'stache bars. I had imagined brake pulls like some European bike but no go.

But...moustache bars are great on a commuter to echo a previous posting about the upright position. And they have a surprising range of possible hand positions which was a pleasant discovery for me over the past year's commuting.

I built my own using a lugged steel frame from a no name bike (and the chrome wheels). I upgraded/replaced most everything else and it was cheaper than buying something new and more importantly, exactly what I wanted.

Before and after:

I have since added a Walds rack and bottle bosses.

Don't. Seriously, they suck. The ergonomics of them are nothing like the Nitto. If you want a cheap set, go with the Origin8 variant (Tiki).

FYI - The Nashbar ones are steel. Boat anchor material.

I run the Nashbar 52cm ones on my heavy commuter/utility bike. For that purpose they are great, for a single speed though I would spend the extra cash to get lighter bars.
If you did get the nashbars, the 52 are great for commuting/squeezing thru traffic. Though I havent ridden them, I would guess the 56cm bars would be better suited for a cruiser/climbing bike.

I am interested in the ergonomic differences between the nashbar design and the nitto. I love them on shorter rides but after about 40+ miles I get some hand numbness. I should probably just bite the bullet and buy a new stem to get them higher, but I hate unwrapping my bars.

I figure if I don't like them, I'll return them and get something different. This is all about the experiment of it. So we'll see. I certainly appreciate everyone's input though, so thank you all.
