Installing Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tires

It all started this past weekend when I planned to put a new set of Schwalbe Marathon Plus (700 x 35) tires on my Jamis Commuter (8 speed IGH). While attempting to get the tire back on the rim, I broke my favorite set of tire levers. I’ve used them to change numerous tires over the years! Dang, are these tires a bear to get on the rim! First they feel too big and flop off of the rim, then your break your hands and levers trying to get them on.

So, my next move was to order a set of metal Park tire irons. No more fooling around, so I thought. I did wipe a small amount of liquid soap on the bead to help them slip on. However, after struggling with the shift cable & cassette joint pulley, I finally got the rear wheel off. I could not imagine doing this on the side of the road or in the rain!

I got the tires on and everything back in place, but now it doesn’t shift! I think the lock ring washer is not positioned properly, but I’m not sure how it should be. Does the lock ring clip into the dropout? I thought I retraced my steps, but no dice…

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If you're talking about the keyed washer, then it does go into the dropout to stop the axle from rotating in the dropout. You'd do better to start a new thread specific to your hub though as this really has nothing to do with the tires.

and put it in the mechanics section with a picture. but he must have figured it out by now. mounting tuff tires is annoying and always temps me to use a freakin' screwdriver instead of a plastic tire lever

you can get steel core plastic tire levers for this exact purpose. I got my set from PBK.

marathon plus gets a bit easier to mount once it starts to wear in.

Broke a lever putting mine on as well (standard gear cluster, so I'm no help on that end). What I found with those tires is that you have to go inch-by-inch to get the tire on the rim when they are new. I tried to put the tire on quickly, like I have done with countless other tires, and thats when the lever broke.

Good luck on the IGH, sorry I'm not of more help.

Did you remove the casette joint as part of removing the rear wheel? You should be able to just remove the shifter cable from the casette joint for rear wheel removal. Easier if the shift cable housing is pulled out of the casette joint nosepiece and the shift cable then guided through the slot there to provide some shifter cable slack.

Carefully read the Shimano instructions for installation of the casette joint and shifter cable. They should have been included with your bike when purchased, in addition to the manual. Data sheets or manuals on all parts have been included with all IGH bikes I have bought. If not then they are downloadable from Shimano's web site.

I built my own Alfine hub IGH rear wheel and installed it on a new frame.
