    Rehabbing

    It has been a little over 10 weeks since the surgeon pounded four pins into my femur, and I still need the crutches to get around. However, things are beginning to brighten a bit. In less than 4 weeks, I ought to be back in the saddle.

    Rehab efforts have been quite a challenge. It took me about 2 weeks just to get back to work. It took 2 more to get to where I could move my leg without feeling throbbing pain. After 6 weeks, I was finally able top put significant weight on it. And, today, I can walk up to 20 feet without using the sticks. This is miles from where I once came.

    So, my goal is to hit my 30 mile commute at least once before the end of the season. I am hoping to take my shot at it around Mid-Auggy. But, to be honest, I will be happy to just ride a few miles pain-free.

    Are you riding the recumbent bike in the gym or at PT? When I hurt my knee, I found that helped me quite a lot to get back. In fact, I liked it so much I switched to recumbent full-time Actually, that wasn't the only reason I switched to a 'bent, but it didn't hurt. I ride 36/day, 4-5 days/week, year-round. The recumbent is an exceptionally comfortable ride for that duration/frequency, and it's better on my knees. Further, I don't have to wear padded shorts.

    That's one serious injury to be rehabbing, baron. As someone who's been through a lot of rehab, and done a lot of it less diligently and less graciously than I should have, I hope you'll accept my heartfelt sympathy and (for whatever it's worth) support as you go through this. Keep us posted, we're with you in spirit at least!

    I was just thinking about you the other day and wondered how you were getting along. Thanks for the update and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

    I hope to get going on the stationary bike this weekend. For now, I am doing what I call air biking: I lay on my back and cycle my legs for about 15 minutes or so. This seems to be my limit right now.

    The big fun activity for me right now is simulated (or crutch-assisted) walking out on our wooded lane. I do a few miles of that each day. Basically, I am cleared to put between 75 and 100% of my weight on the leg or as much as pain allows.

    All in all, the recovery process should take 12-14 weeks. So, I am very close to completing it. I am already making plans for my first bike/camping trip. Commuting again will not be too far behind.
