Tired of the MTB, Craigslist find

So I've been commuting on a Mountain bike for a while, and the wind is killing me. I have a strong (10+mph) headwind each way! I want to get a road bike to do some tris soon as well. There's not much locally here except new from the LBS. I can't afford new and personally find used a much better deal. I found this ad on CL. Is it a good deal? Seems kinda shadey..

CL Ad- lemonde road bike all shimano ultegra parts - $400
probabbly a 2003 model lemond with all shimano ultegra parts. bike is in fantastic condition.
there is no vin and frame has been painted. "so i'm guessing it was possibly stolen"
i bought it from a add at my school about 2 years ago for $600
i road it for about 5 months and put new tires on it. this is a great bike for someone who doesnt care if the frame is all colorful and shiny. perfect for you scene kids
fits a 5'7"- 5'9" rider.

Its about an hour drive away, so I'm thinking of going to take a look at it and offering him like $300.
What would you do?

1. The guy is morally flexible enough to buy a bike he's pretty sure was stolen and then sell it to somebody else. How far can you trust him?

2. The rightful owner is missing their bike and you'd be providing a market for the people that stole it.

3. You someday might want to sell this bike yourself. Are you going to want to explain the missing serial number and paint job?

1) ebay

2) personally, I wouldn't buy anything that the seller thinks was stolen.

True good point guys, guess the searching has got the best of me and I just wanted to pull the trigger. I'll keep looking. Plus the more I've thought about it seems like he could have easily stolen it and just have made up some story for CL. Oh well.
