It typically takes me about 25min to get to work by bike, and if I am driving, since EVERY road surrounding my house is under construction, it would take me over an hour by car most likely, or 40min at the least. When the roads are clear and theres no construction it only takes me about 15min by car but I rather ride anyways.

My gym is 8 miles UPHILL. When I get there, who needs a gym?

It takes me 10 minutes to bike downtown during rush hour, 15-20 to bus...and I can't imagine how long it would take by car if I needed to find parking downtown--Yikes!

10 mins walk to the bus stop
10-30 min wait (depending on who the drivers are that morning)
15 min bus ride to work

vs.

24 min (and going down) bike ride on my mtn bike.

circa 20 Min on Autobahn - Suzuki 1100 GSX/F (circa 40 km)
circa 25 Min on Autobahn - VW Type 4 Bus
circa 34 Min in / 29 Min out - Trek 5200 (37 km)
circa 1.5 Hour - SBB (Swiss Train & Foot)

Biking is cheaper, too...(no parking fees, and I have to eat anyway) Keeps me fit too. Feels faster than the 1100er. What more could I want?

I'm hoping 29 min for 37 km is a typo... because holy cow! You're commuting at 76.5 km/hr (47mph) on a trek 5200!

ha ha ha...there's a biggish hill which slows me down on the way in...ergo 32-34 in, and 28-30 out (back home)

Of course, the fact I'm going IN to work and going OUT home might have something to do with it...

It takes me about an hour to get to work by public transportation and 25 minutes cycling! If I drove it would be maybe 15 minutes depending on traffic.

For me, it's a bit of both. Going some places and distances, it's faster. Others (like work), it takes longer.

It's not so much a matter of whether it takes more or less time, but whether the time it does take is better or worse. I absolutely hate driving a car, while I love cycling and riding my motorcycle.

But, since I ride a big cruiser that's not all that well suited to urban riding, I'm more likely to cycle to work (even though it's s 25 mile round trip) than to ride the motorcycle.

The rare occasions when I drive to work (or anywhere else for that matter) only serve to reinforce why I don't like to drive.

My drive or ride to work take about the same time. Riding means I have to take a change of clothes and clean up though. If my company would approve cycling shorts as dress code, I would be very happy!

I found a nice, no traffic area in the office to hang my office shirts. I usually keep a pair of slacks/jeans in a drawer with some nice air freshener. Outside that you'd just need to wash up a bit and put some deoderant when you come in.

I bring in/home clothes about every two weeks. Might drive the clean freaks crazy but hey, I smell better than some of them combined

It takes me about 30-35 minutes to get from my girlfriend's house on the south side of town to work via the interstate in my car. It takes about 45-50 minutes to get to work on my Trek 520, with weather and motivation being the primary modifiers.

Overall, I think it's a little faster for me to bike downtown than it would be to drive. In terms of actual transit time, car is probably faster (depending on time of day), but then there's parking. In general takes about 15-20 to bike downtown, by car it takes about 10-12 depending about traffic. But it sometimes takes as long as 15-20 minutes to find a parking space, so the total commute time by are is anywhere between 15-35 minutes. Since I can park my bike just about anywhere, the total commute is no longer than 20 min.

Hi y'all..I'm back to defend my honor! The commute is going great. In the previous thread you'd know that unless I'm going more tham 5mph I'm going to get caught in a curbside consult by one of my patients. If they want to catch up to me they'll REALLY need to run now--great exercise for them. Yes, the gym is 8 miles uphill. I live on the Bay. Everything is uphill from here except for the cost of living. Yes, I suppose it is "lame" that I can't/don't want to do an 8 mile uphill and then 90 minutes in the gym. At 43 I'm not trying for the TDF; if I was I would not only be lame but also SUPINE on a stretcher!

My commute is roughly 14-1/2 miles each way. By car, it takes about 25 minutes at most. When I ride, it takes me a touch over an hour, 1:03 to 1:05 pretty consistently. There are a fair amount of hills in each direction which is the slow down. But the days I ride, I'm smilin'!

I have a teriffic ride. Start out semi-rural, little traffic and scenic. The last 1/3 is in town where it's developed and busy. On the way home, it's great to get back into that open area. Saw a rabbit running across the road the other day.

Well,

By car = who needs it not owned one in 5 years
By public transport = 45 mins is my fastest.
By Bike = 28-32 mins

We all know the benefits. But here in London during the summer you have the added benefit of not being crammed into the tube like a sardine and asked to pay for the pleasure.

That's great! In London you have excellent public transit, and you still bike. I really more people in this country would bike rather than drive. I originally got back into cyclng about seven years ago when I went back to school and needed a cheap, efficient means of transportation. Now I love it. My car died about three years ago, and I never replaced it. Since I've gotten used to cycling, I hate driving! Sometimes I rent a car if I want to leave the city to go hiking, and the drive to the trail usually bores me to death.

It takes me 40 minutes up hill to bike 12kms and 30 minutes home (mostly downhill). It takes about 35 minutes by public transport. How long it takes by car I don't know -- I don't own a car.
