tire size
is it ok to put narrower tire in the front than in the rear?(road bike)
27x1 in the front. 27x1 1/4 in the back. Different brand, tires.

Why not? I can't imagine any problems as long as it fits correctly.
Makes no sense to me though. From a mtb and a road riding perspective a front tire needs more grip - recovering from a rear tire slide out is a lot easier than a front one - therefore it needs to be wider.
Because of the above logic, the rear tire does not need as much traction and because it carries more weight and thus friction, it would be better to have a skinnier tire in the rear so you can go faster.

I'm just setup a 700 x 37 tire on my front rim (leaving a 700 x 32 on the rear) and it worked out well. I got the idea from Sheldon Brown's page on tire sizes, but the reasoning is the same as what z415 described.
