There's A New Sheriff In NOLA...

A friend of mine who is a beat cop in New Orleans gave me a heads-up that his new boss HATES cyclists and plans to crack down on all of us scoundrels and neerdowells. Mostly interested in pedestrian safety, but also starting to clamp down on lights, reflectors, and bells - all required by law here.

I give it two months before he gives up. Unless he does not plan to get ANYTHING else done for an extended period. I hope they start with contraflow and Ninja cyclists first. I'll take it easy with the red light running ICP (In Cop's Presence) for a bit Downtown and the French Quarter and keep my ears open for more details. I am interested in how the apprehension will take place since bicycles are the only vehicles capable of actually MOVING most of the day in those areas.

Like I said. Two months tops. It's been tried before with laughable results.

I recommend that you and Sundance hide out at the Hole-In-The-Wall until the posse gives up.

If not, then at least add a rear-facing camera, so you can entertain us with video from the chases.

just always have a video camera within arms reach in case they decide to shoot the hell out of you for no reason or for simply not having a rear reflector on.

I've seen a couple of your videos JoeyBike. You might have a lot to worry about . But you are right, it looks like the only things moving in your videos is you. I'm guessing you have all the lawful accessories just in case.

My thoughts exactly. Aren't cycling scofflaws (such as Joeybike) the LEAST of the city's problems?

Heck, let the murders and drug dealers go free, as long as Joey is off the streets, we can ALL sleep better...

Reminds me of the episode of COPS in N.O. where they do a bicycle "theft" sting: they lean a fancy walmart looking bike against some public property back off and wait for some down on their luck looking person to grab it and ride off on it. While I would like to see some attention paid to catching bicycle thieves, I'd rather they focus on people who are willing and able to mess with a locked bike. I've got little sympathy for someone who loses a bike they failed to lock up, especially in an area with the number of down on their luck people that N.O. seems to have.

All joking aside, some things said in this thread remind me of conversations with friends when I was a teen.

If they're handing out tickets for running reds and not having lights... GOOD! One less ninja cyclist to worry about and one less "hardcore" cyclist who thinks he can run reds to worry about when I'm driving.

To NOLA Chief of Police,

Sir it may greatly interest you to know that a multiple offender to the public safety of the fine citizens of New Orleans has openly boasted of his nefarious accomplishments even under the noses of the fine hard working members of The Crescent City's finest.

You can locate the evidence at this link: https://www.vimeo.com/user455142/videos

As you can see the suspect is a repeat offender that frequents the same locations consistently. May I be bold enough to suggest unmarked cars, multiple spike strips, and tazers should be deployed?

Yours Truely,
A Concerned Citizen

(Joey - Looking forward to the police chase vid. Good luck )

Wear something taser proof Joey. You know that's the only way to bring down a cyclist when your squad car is stuck in traffic and you're too out of shape to chase after a cyclist.

Escape and evade kit? Carry a spare shirt and hat that are different colors?
Roll of orange duct tape for your frame? Theatrical make up and a wig to
change your skin color? or sex? Police scanner to evade the choke
points.

By "down on their luck people" do you mean criminals or crackheads? Because NOLA has plenty of both. Being poor is no excuse to steal a bicycle. In a perfect world, one would be able to leave any bike unlocked. But because there are dirtbag criminals we have to carry locks, business and governments have to spend money on racks, and life is a bigger hassle.

I'd like to see thieves caned on TV. 20 lashes should be enough to deter them.

When I first read the thread title I thought Joey had been elected Sheriff.

Does NOLA allow lane sharing down there? Or are cyclists legally supposed to blend into the flow of traffic with no lane splitting or lane sharing? My arm would get real tired signaling everytime I crossed a lane divider / lane marker / lane paint.
