Obama thinks helmets are dorky
I don't care. helmets are dorky.
I just want to know the bike he is riding now.
Guesses
Looks liike a giant logo. but i cant find it. Some kind of rack on back. The chainline goes back like a SS or Internal hub. but i cant see the shifters/cables. just the brake

It's not like he's ever going to ride in traffic. I can see him only tooling around on some protected, low speed bike path.
Edit: OK, and maybe on some escorted, low traffic roads too.

I probably would just because it's automatic for me -- I always have the helmet with me, and it's more of a PITA to carry it than to wear it -- but, y'know...bike path at the beach, at the speed of a young child...I don't think anyone who's not a helmet nazi or a knee-jerking Obama-hater would make an issue out of it.

One is legally required to, one isn't.
I see this comment a lot as if there was some hypocrisy involved. The government has removed the parents rights to make the decision for their child. Because they choose to comply with the law does not necessarily mean they agree with it.

I think helmets are dorky but I still wear them. I want my kids to wear them. When I ride with my kids, I wear my dorky helmet at dorky slow speeds to set the example. I don't care whether other adults wear helmets.
Lots of good reasons to hate Obama that have nothing to do with helmets, but this is the wrong forum for that discussion.

I didn't realized that his lack of helmet means you can read his mind. That is some power you got there.

My 7-year-old wears a helmet when we go for rides, and I don't.
It is the law, and my son is more into following it for that reason than I am. My son hasn't had any significant accident riding, but when he was going on one of his first long rides in a beach area, he slipped once in a sand covered parking lot, and fell twice in a trail with big difficult gravel. These were all falls going about 5 miles per hour or even less. He's a much better rider now. He rides about 30 miles a week average, goes on many types of surfaces, and hasn't had any more falls in the ensuing months. I'd say conservatively he's about 10 times less likely to be in an accident than he was back at those beach times. He rides around the block with traffic on his own. However, my estimate is that he is about 100 times more likely to have an accident/fall than I am when we go on our trips together. He just isn't as aware/safe/coordinated (even though he's really good for his age and extremely cautious by nature), but I still think cycling is a pretty safe activity for him, as the lack of problems in the last 500 miles seems to underscore. It isn't hard for him to understand how he "needs" a helmet more than I do on our rides though.
And people on the MUP make comments or gestures about the helmet to me from time to time as we pass them going the other way.

In ye olde thread about this (in an other subforum) a poster surmised it's a Jamis Commuter.
Seems like a good guess to me. That's certainly a Jamis headbadge.

I don't care if Obama wears a helmet or not, nor do I care if any of you do or not.
BUT, I think it's smart to have your kids wear a helmet if you're not going to. You can feel secure knowing they'll be around to help you re-learn the alphabet.

I don't think they are dorky, but no where near as cool as a Motorcycle helmet. I only wore a helmet when I was more accident prone kid.

I didn't see in the news stories the quote where he says they're dorky. Or did you just infer that from the fact that he rode a bike without one once?
I think they're dorky too, and I won't ride without one normally, but on a path like that, at the 10 MPH he's likely to max out at, what the heck difference does it make? I could get hurt worse tripping while walking.

Thank goodness he's riding a bike from an American company. Way up in the thread somebody thought it might be a Giant and nothing against Giant but the POTUS should ride a bike from an American company.

Regarding using an American company, I would hope the Obama wouldn't think he has to use an American-based company's bike just because he's the President. That seems pretty lame but it wouldn't really surprise me too much. Good to see he didn't feel he had to wear a helmet for doing something as dangerous as walking around because he was the President.

Politics are funny like that. I screenprint T-shirts and 99% of jobs for politicos are printed on Made In USA Tees, about 85% of work for Demos is printed on Union Made Tees.
