I did a quick survey of some of the people I work with. There are at least five people (besides myself) out of 20 or so in my department that have taken up cycling to work. Has commuting by bike made inroads into your workplace?

It's just been me and one other guy for the last three years. A few others here at work own bikes and will ride recreationally on the weekends, but they haven't ever ridden to work.

So far just me..There is one other who has talked with me about it but I dont think he's serious.

I started this year, so I guess that's an inroad :-) Other than me, there's only one every day commuter that I know of. On really nice days, there's sometimes a third or fourth bike in the basement where we are encouraged to park them... that's out of 100+ full-timers. :-(

There's five of us (out of 500) who regularly cycle. Funnily enough there was a sixth guy today - soccer shorts, padded jacket, big rucksack, saddle too low, spoke reflectors, helmet on the back of the head.

He'll learn.

It's taken 5 years total, and 3 years with me being the pestering captain and gung-ho cheerleader of our Tour de Cure team, but we finally have other people riding to work than just me.

Three others at my facility and 2 at one of our other sites are riding to work at least 3 days/week.

That's a pretty good number for this area. Does your workplace take steps to promote bike commuting? Is there a nice, non-threatening route to get there?

I work at one of the local universities (UW). Right now, there are a lot of bikes on campus. Come January, not quite so many.

I'm it. One of the people who works next door lives 2 blocks away (I used to walk by there when I walked to work before I moved) not only drives to work, but she's driven home for lunch at times too.

Nope, but then we're only 4 employees. One has talked about it but nothing so far. Another lives so far I wouldn't be bike-commuting if I lived there either and the last guy offers me to use his car when it rains so I guess he won't be riding anytime soon.

I am the only one. Of course, I work in BFE where the only way to get to work involves traveling on a 60 mph highway which people are not willing to do. I get told I'm crazy all the time One guy rode his bike a couple of times but I guess he left...

I work in a research lab at a (some would say) major university. At the moment my lab consists of 3 people, my adviser, a technician and myself. My adviser regularly commutes by bike during the spring, summer and fall, albeit about 1.5 miles. I like to ride the 5.25 miles about 50% of the time (trying to increase that percentage) spring, summer and fall. Last week, the new technician who lives right up the street from me rode in as well (his car was in the shop.) It may not be a huge number, none the less, I figure it's a win when an entire laboratory gets to work by bike!

I'm alone as well. With all this rain lately I've resorted to driving my Honda Pilot until things dry out.

Out of 10 of us, I'm the only one that has gone to an everyday commuter. I sold my car a few weeks ago since I rarely drove it anymore, so now I'm 100% committed. A coworker bikes almost every day, and comes right past my house and we ride in together. There are two others that bike 1-2 days a week. Not bad for an office of just 9 people. But then again, in a town as small as Chico cycling is pretty common especially around downtown and the college area. There are a few roads that are busy but for the most part there are always alternate posted bike routes.

One of our people lives about a half mile away and drives to work.
I stroll past his place everyday on my lunchtime walk. Go figure.

Even with the gas prices going up so much last year, you'd figure more people would consider bicycling to work but instead, they are "motor-cycling" more. It continues to be the same few guys every week who pedal to work. People probably see and maybe consider it in their mind but as soon as those elevator doors close, they forget all about it.

I am the only one and there are over 200 employees here. I get comments about it almost every day, when it rains I get them all day. I haven't tried biking in the snow but I intend to do it this winter, I am sure everyone will decide I am completely insane when that happens.

We've got five out of about 25, and would have more if some people lived a bit closer in and/or didn't have kid pickup shuffles to manage.

400 workers in my building, I'm the only commuter. Management did have to install a bike rack to comply with city codes, someone turned them in (wonder who? ).

Company as a whole, not many cyclists. But in my team of 9, there are 5 who rides to work. 3 out 5 riders including me are in the management role. What is sad is we prolly make up 50% of the cyclists in the company of ~400. Sad yes. Alot of folks I talk to say they like to do it, but somehow never did it.

Work in a building of 2,000 folks ... five of us ride, on a good day. Usually, three.

I work at Laurier and with the weather being as it is, the number is rather high. When it turns lousy in November I suspect that there will only two of us hard core commuters still riding. One of the other guys puts his bike away and walks instead. Fortunately I live near the south end of the Iron Horse Trail so I can get in rather easily (After I get across the cursed Parkway and if they would kindly stop ripping the trail up). Of the other cyclists, one lives in Belmont Village, another near Erbsville Rd and Columbia and two or three others live near Margaret and Guelph Ave. No extra steps are taken by the University to encourage cycling as there are not even bike racks outside the office (due to recent renovations on the exterior). The only real incentive is the high cost of parking even for faculty and staff and the lack of parking spaces.

I'm 23 and live in the South, so commuting by bicycle is really unheard of, especially at my age. However, I've told a few people how I've been getting to work and most of them thought it was really cool
