What Kind Of Distance...

I figured a "distance" thread" would be continually out on the front page here...

What are the "one way" distances that people are commuting?

I'm an old guy that's just started on the bike, and I'd really love to be able to ride to work. At least until it starts getting cold. As the car flies, it's about 17.5 miles to work. That distance doesn't completely scare me, but I am old, fat, and generally out of shape. What's really cool is there's a trail that will cover about 12 of those miles- maybe more- but the rest would be city streets, and that's what does scare me. The aspect of the 17 miles that does scare me is the sweat... I know I'll be a sweaty mess by the time I make it here...

For those of you that do long distances to work- do you change and/or shower at work? How does that all work out for you?

Are the choices one way or round trip? For me, to and from is eight miles.

20 miles each way for me. I was old (53), but I'm younger now that I have been riding to work every day. I'm fortunate that it is all bike path except for a short ride through the light industrial park where our building is. We also have showers available so arriving covered in sweat is no problem.

I should have thought to specify that...

Let's call it one way.

11 miles for me.
This must be about the 1000th "how far is your commute" thread. Maybe only the 10th one this year though.

I'm doing about 17 miles each way - all on roads.
In the summer around where I live the low temperature hoovers in the upper 70s. By the time I get to the office, I'm soaked with sweat. Fortunately we have a shower in the building, so I hit the shower and change into clean clothes before starting the work day.

My commute to work is 6 miles. However, the distance from work is usually 10 to 20 miles.

My commute to college is a bit over 10 miles one way on the best route for biking. If I take the quickest route for driving, it's a bit over 12 1/2 miles. You might find an lesser distance to your destination going through subdivisions and such, as I did.

I cool down while unloading saddlebags and rack trunk, then change into clean underwear every day. For cleanup, all I need to do is rinse road dust off my face, wash my hands, and use the hot-air hand dryer on my riding clothes.

21 miles each way, 3x a week. Shower when I get to work and when I get home. I'm a complete mess by the time I reach my destination.

2 km. Stinks I know. But I usually run for an hour or bike for an hour or two before the commute. And I do the 2k thing back and forth home for lunch and to the Post Office. I'm on and off the bike all day for errands.

4 miles, but most days I take a 20+ mile detour. No law says you have to take the most direct route.

I just moved and my new commute is 22 miles each way over rolling hills. I have a locker room with shower and change of clothes at work. I've ridden it every day so far, but the jury is out on whether I'll ride through the winter like I did last year. I'm thinking I may do a combination of bike and train once the weather turns.

26 miles one way.. Considering Calif traffic and freeway gridlock it was the happier choice. .. If only not for 3 significant hillls , I might on some days been able to beat driving time on the bike.. And of course getting to work on the bike made for a happier employee. If only I had not those 3 hills I might have ridden to work every day.. Due to irregular hours, i rode to work about 1/3 of the time..

I'm going 8 miles, mostly downhill in the morning and uphill on the way back. However, oftentimes I add a sidetrip to the store or just a joyride so my mileage varies.

Total distance is ~22mi... I simply don't have time to ride it all. Just started 2/5 commuting this week (drive to a park, ride the rest), and after a week or so to get better timing down I'll increase the biking leg of it.

At my last job it was 7mi each way.

Neither have any type of shower. Just take clothes and shoes in a bag and use a washcloth at work to wipe down.

13.8 there, about a half mile longer on way home because of one way streets.
