My commute is 16.7 miles each direciton. When people ask how long the ride is, I tell them 'sixteen and a half.' I don't want to exaggerate.

My commute to work is 5.81 miles. When people at work ask me how far I ride to work I always say 6 miles and they accept that. I used to say 5.81 miles but the response was always some sarcastic comment. It's just easier to say 6 miles.

If you're concerned with being accurate, saying eight miles is fine. Saying eight point zero miles would be incorrect.

Personally I'd say just under eight miles. Not very precise, but fine for normal human consumption.
