made a big mistake
A few weeks back I fixed up an 78 or so Univega for my son (his grandmother bought it in the bike boom...used it a bit and it has sat since) so some cleaning ,greasing, new tires, tubes, seat, barwrap and add a speedo and it is ready.
The mistake.....he is so much faster on this bike than his old BMX, that he completely beat my tail on the commute....I had to really push to keep up (ok i know I am out of shape and need to lose a ton of weight). I am hoping I can get my wife to pick him up to save me on the trip home
seriously it shows how many kids growing up on mountain bikes, BMX bikes and cruisers don't get how really fast a bike can be.
He is planning of commuting tomorrow.....time for some ibuprofen.

It surprises me that he didn't lag 20 feet behind you the whole way and then, pretending to be totally out of breath, say "Wow Dad, I didn't realize you were THAT fit... and me on this fast bike an' all!"

Sounds like you mistakenly adjusted his brakes so that they weren't properly rubbing his rims. Easy fix.
