Ride home was singlespeed tonight..

Around 1/3 of my ride home after work, my rear derailleur was feeling weird and not shifting normally, so I stopped to adjust it.. put it in the highest rear gear and middle front gear, went to shift and *SNAP*..

So here I am, broken cable, still got about 8-10 miles to get home and i'm stuck in one gear, which happens to be the highest. As I take off, slowly.. I realize I can shift to the lowest front gear and it'll be a little easier. It was, not a whole lot, but surprisingly doable, even up the hills.

Luckily for me, my local shop Orange 20 bikes.. was still open and the guys there were able to fix it for me, even though I rolled in pretty late. Thanks orange 20!

So, overall, a slightly painful ride, but I got to the shop fairly quickly since I was in high gear the whole way. hah.. nothing against fixed and singlespeed guys, but I am glad I have gears.

That happened to me last week, but fortunately for me it was my front dr, so I still had 9 speeds in the rear.

I've been doing my 10-mile commute on my SS since March. I am currently building up a new road bike and very much looking forward to turning my old road bike into a commuter.

Having gears will be nice. So will having racks!

Very nice that your shop fixed you up so late in the evening.

When that has happened to me, the cable broke at the shifter. This left lots of cable still attached to the rear derailer and threaded through the housing. I pulled the cable until the derailer had shifted to the middle of the cassette. Then I tied the cable to my rack so the chain would stay on that middle cog. Off I went with my front derailer providing three variations of my mid range gear.

About a week ago I was on a nice long pleasure ride, and about 15 miles from the nearest town, my front derailer cable broke, leaving me in my granny gear for the remainer of the ride. 26-11 is surprisingly not that bad for flats.

It is possible to choose which gear one uses with the limit screws. E.g. if the front cable snaps, its usually no problem to use the limit screw to keep the chain on the middle ring (given that you have something to turn the limit screws with you).
