That also has the side benefit of keeping vampires at bay. I should have eaten some of that when I went with the wife to see "Twilight".

With too many kids to bring the stuff home I got it, lasted about 5 days but my lungs still feel like crap.
Tried the trainer and it was OK.

Might try to ride Friday if I can finally take a deep breath without coughing up a lung.

Everyone I talked to that has gotten it says the cough after the fact is the worse and lasts a couple weeks.

There are a couple of runners here at work and they had gotten it and are having the same issues with breathing...so damn frustrating!

He wasn't making fun of people with autism, he was making fun of the long-held notion that the vaccine will cause autism. Geesh, sometimes I think some people spend their day looking for ways to get offended.

- I used to get a lingering cough every winter that would then morph into some kind of bronchial crud that would linger for weeks.
- Since I started commuting 3 winters ago (in all kinds of weather, other than snow and ice), I haven't had a single cough, cold, fever, etc.
- Last week, while out of town on a business trip and off my bike for a week, I got my first cold in 3 years.

This proves that cycling prevents sickness.

Where is my Nobel prize?

Whenever I fly, even if I take efforts to stay hydrated, I tend to get a scratchy or sore throat and am more likely to get a cold. Could be the poor/dry air, could be the extra close contact w/others, could be the extra stress and/or often reduced sleep traveling by air can cause or a combination of all factors.

Perhaps if you did fly for this trip it is not proof that cycling prevents sickness for you, but evidence that flying increases the chance of you becoming sick.

I am well aware of the concept I spent two days a week with kids that suffer from autism. The cause of autism is unknown, there is no cure or even a set definition hence why is called Autism Spectrum Disorder. If any of you were to spend any amount of time around a child with autism you certainty wouldn't find jokes about it funny. I also don't find jokes about mental ***********, handicapped or other disabilities funny in the slightest.

My older son is autistic, and my younger son has an autism screening scheduled for next week, so you can bet that I spend far, far more time with kids who suffer from autism than you do. Yet somehow I managed to find KP's comment funny. You, of course, are most welcome to find a joke not funny; however, you are not welcome to tell me what I should and should not find funny, nor are you welcome to speak on my behalf in berating others for what they find funny.

What I want to know is, since my kids are autistic, does that mean I don't need to get them vaccinated?

I usually always get at least one cold during the winter. I began commuting in June, and this year I have gotten one cold. 50% of the time something is going around the office, I start to get a sore throat for a day or two, and then my body fights it off. I get every other sickness that goes around. This year it was accompanied by a bad cough that took me off my bike for nearly 2 weeks.

Even though I feel much healthier and more fit than I was before I started commuting, I think it hasn't had much effect at all on my immune system.

The joke wasn't even about autism. It was about a misconception regarding the vaccine. There is a level of abstraction there.

Sorry to burst your 'I'm the only person in the world who understands' bubble, but I have an autistic niece and spend quite a bit of time volunteering my time to a nonprofit that specializes in services to autistic children. Unlike you, this has not chased off my sense of humor or made my skin paper thin. I am sorry you suffer those handicaps...but luckily they are correctable with a chill pill.

Didn't work for me. I commute 28 miles a day 5 days a week and had H1N1 3 weeks ago. I started back on the bike this week and am struggling to get my speed and endurance back.

I hate being sick and off the bike.

Riding is good for you.
Yeah. Hype is one of the main reasons that I live w/o a TV. Pit Bulls still give me the willies, though.

An update: I have been a bit knocked out with this, and took Thursday and Friday off. I feel like I've kept one step ahead of developing the barky deep cough that my kids and wife still have. We'll see...

Mild exercise has definitely helped me when sick; I just have to be careful not to do it in cold, dry air though - that irritates my throat even worse.

And I have to throw my hat in the "no one was making fun of people with Autism" ring.

Well, I'm back to riding. I took a whole week of riding off after missing Thursday and Friday from work, mainly because the week I came back was parent teacher conferences, which knock me out anyway.

It's great to be back on the bike. I feel normal again!

And I am pretty much convinced that commuting did minimize how sick I got, especially compared to my wife and the little guys.
