Boxers, briefs or....

old cycling shorts?

This morning upon arriving at work, I notice that I forgot to pack my tighty whities.

"Fek", I thought to myself. Looks like I gotta go commando again. Then I thought, why not just leave my cycling shorts on? These shorts that I wear under my tights are just a little bit old. Wouldn't dare where them out in public by themselves as I'd probably be arrested for indecent exposure, or, at a minimum, be laughed at.

Anyway, I figured they'd make decent undies, and 7 hours later, I must say that they are working out well. Everything is well, pretty much where it ought be. Maybe I'll make a habit of this.

Any one else do this?

My cycling shorts are wonderful on the bike but horrifically uncomfortable off the bike. I couldn't imagine wearing them all day. If faced between that or going commando, I've got no problem with the latter.

I have forgotten my undies and/or socks on occasion. Luckily for me, there is a Kmart about a half mile down the road, so the first time I forgot each, I told the boss that I would be back in less than a half hour and went there and purchased the necessities. Now, I keep extra pairs of undies and extra socks in one of my dest drawers in case I forget to pack them.

I've forgotten underwear on a few occasions. I've always just gone commando. And liked it!

Yes I have wore my bike shorts when I forgot my man thong....I mean underwear.

But I sit in my office most of the day and nobody would notice if I just didn't change into my "work" clothes.

The only time I had underwear dilemma was when I grabbed freshly washed boxers from the top of the laundry. It was nice to have a pair back in rotation that I hadn't used for a while.

Then I got to work, showered and pulled them on. Doh, all they were was an elastic band with a front and back panels hanging free and no longer sewn together. These were in the dusting cloth rotation. No wonder I hadn't worn them in a while. Well there I was in the locker room with a flap of material in front and back and instead of pulling the off just pulled my pants over quickly.

I would never wear my used bike shorts all day in the office. Yuck. They retain way too much moisture and will only lead to badness. Maybe a fresh pair would be OK.

I used to do the commando thing by choice back in my early 20s. Today, I don't much care for it. My newer cycliong shorts would kinda suck to wear all day under jeans, but, this old pair is pretty much like a pair of nylon panties with some very worn out chamois. Really not bad at all. Of course I do work in a building that has it's temp and humidity closely regulated. Definitely wouldn't wanna wear it in a hot humid environment.

dood, you're an adult now, don't call them tighty whities, come on now, they're "briefs", or just "underwear". also wearing used sweaty bike shorts doesn't sound attractive and I'm sorry I read this thread

Commando for a day is no big. I've done it a few times.

Now, forgetting to pack your pants and having to go back home for them is a pain in the arse!

I'd choose commando. Sitting around all day in worn cycling shorts is a recipe for Monkey Butt.

They are my undies, I shall call them whatever I feel like. Maybe I'll give them names.

Were I sitting around all day, commando would be fine. I do a pretty good bit of walking though which means lots of chaffing which is not really all that much fun.

So, after 25+ miles of riding and 12 hours of roaming around at work, my arse is decidedly unmonkey like.

Not saying I will make this a regular habit, but, for me anyway, it beats going commando.

Yeah, I leave the shorts on. On occasion I've done this deliberately just to save time.

Isn't one of the main points of wearing cycling shorts to absorb the sweat and subsequent bacteria that could cause problems to your taint?

By leaving them on all day after riding, aren't you wallowing in all that bacteria?

Exactly. It is better to go commando.
I am attempting to improve my skin top to bottom and wearing sweaty cycling shorts all day is directly opposed to that task.

I've started wearing my work clothes to work...If I dress in layers, it works better, because I can remove and add clothes as needed and show up to school with a minimum of sweat. Layers also work better at school, because temps fluctuate a LOT here. I have started always having back up clothes in the closet though - I've just found it silly to wear non-casual clothes to ride on an English 3 speed. Kinda like wearing a football helmet to play Madden NFL on your x-box...

Hmm, how does it differ from, say, touring? I've done sixty mile days on tour, getting on and off the bike, having meals in town and walking around, day after day and not had the dreaded "Monkey Butt."

Worst thing I ever forgot at work after a bike commute was socks.. Have had to wear cycling shorts all night in the tent once on a bike tour.- cause my street gear did not dry out.. I slept ok and was ready in the AM a bit faster when heading out on the bike..... Can't but say skivvies are a bit more comfortable tho..

Sure. If by "wallowing in all that bacteria", you mean "getting on with your life".

Don't get me wrong, after getting home after sitting around in 3-day-old bike shorts all day, I'd be having a shower.

I don't understand what so many people's aversion is to freebagging it if you forget your skivvies. Have a shower, throw some powder on your undercarriage and put your trousers on.

Do not mistakenly grab the Gold Bond foot powder instead of body powder, though. Think "Assos Chamois Cream" times ten.

Yeah, I have a couple pairs of really old cycling shorts that have a pretty minimal diaper at this point (er, sorry, "chamois"). I could see them working out ok as compression shorts/boxer briefs in a pinch. As is I only wear them underbaggies or over/under tights. Not alone, for the reasons you stated.
