Wow. 80mph winds? Say "hi" to Toto and that butterface with the red shoes for me.

I've never not ridden due to wind, but my commute is only about 6 miles, mostly MUP. If I were riding 1ft from 55mph traffic my answer would differ.

Had a beautiful tail wind this morning, unfortunatly the wind was blowing in the same direction this afternoon... Took me twice as long as this morning to commute. Nice workout though .

Same here. Nothing makes me want to ride less than wind.

My cutoff is 60kmph (~ 35-40 mph). Any more than that crosses my threshold from hard workout to downright dangerous.

I would recommend not riding. You're entitled to a car ride once in awhile. Pile on car related errands and the like. Like other say, it's not a ocntest and there are definite hazards at those velocities.

I weigh 100lbs. Gusts of wind mixed with wet leaves = scary.

Hi,

I followed some of your suggestions. Slept early got up early and gave myself plenty of time. I also want to see what the condition will be like in the morning. Well, it must be the calm before the storm. The commute to work was uneventful. It was just a little breezy and clear. I faced head wind the whole trip home. Fortunately, no gust that make me feel like I could tip over or via off course. I made it home in one piece but more tired than usual. I don't know what the wind speed was. But definitely not as forecast and no complain there.

Just in case you're wondering, I am in the Pacific North West.

Thanks,

Wow, thats quite a big penis my friend!!! Well into double digits in inches. I have yet to experience more then 35mph gusts, but anything more then that and I'm staying away from moving cars.

I was out yesterday with the trailer to pick up my daughter from school. Winds were 20-25 m/s = 35-50 mph (granted, not so bad at street level). Most of the time it was a side wind, but there were a few times I had to head straight into it. Ouch.

The last km was downwind...don't think I pedalled once.

forecast calling for gusts to 50, sure.

Last night was one of those nights, i was fighting 30 plus and gusting higher headwinds downhill and had to pedal to maintain forward momenteum.

forecast of sustained winds above 50, full gale warnings in effect, no bike.

I always go in with the assumption that the wind will slow me down. Most days, it does. I live in the OK panhandle. But, some days I'm just early, which isn't a problem for me.

My favorite extreme wind stories: https://tinyurl.com/ylfbbyg and https://tinyurl.com/ycj7acf More than I really want to tackle, but inspiring, just the same. Personally, my windiest ride was the Inaugural Day Windstorm (Bill Clinton, that is, first term - honest, it's still a famous storm here in the Puget Sound area) when I got to ride to work across a 2 mile long floating bridge with waves breaking over it. If I had known, I probably would have stayed home, but it was fun at the time. Coming home, the bridge was closed, and I had to detour around the south end of the lake (20 extra miles), which gave me an opportunity to view the roots of many horizontal trees. I was told that the gusts were over 50 mph, but I wasn't counting at the time.

I amend my previous comments to say that I would ride in winds up 50-60 mph, perhaps higher, if I were guaranteed to have a tailwind the whole way.

A 50mph headwind is bad (horrible actually). When the crosswind gusts that bad, I get off the bike and walk (unless I'm on a MUP). I don't want to get blown under a truck or something like that.

I ride with and against the wind. I agree this new format isn't nice.

Agreed. I really hate riding into the wind. Especially uphill.

About six years ago I rode home from work in a storm that 'officially' had wind gusts up to 135km/h, then I got up and rode to a meeting the same night in the same storm. The ride home from work and the ride *to* the meeting were both against the wind, and I found it quite invigorating. That said, the storm did dump around 10 inches of rain that night, and I love riding in tropical downpours. When I rode home with the tailwind, it felt like someone following me with a bucket of water tipped at 45 degrees. Traffic? They all stayed inside that night.
