"Know anybody who needs a bike?"
Been working from home a lot lately and now I'm starting night classes at the college downtown, about 10 miles from my house. I'm going to bike to that as much as possible.
Yesterday I'm trying out a route to make sure it's cool, no large areas of ice or snow, streets actually go through, etc. On the way back a couple of guys pull up next to me in a car and ask if I know anyone who needs a bike. They had a bike in the back, pointing to it, saying it's a nice one. I just smiled and said "I don't think so, thanks", kept pedaling. They pulled a u-turn. Didn't think much of it at that moment, but then later I was wondering if they would have tried to steal my bike if I had stopped. I'll bet the one they had was stolen. Maybe I'm just paranoid .. but just got the feeling they were up to no good. At any rate a reminder to stay alert out there.

Thats just like the guys that pull up around here and say they have an extra home entertainment system. Just pull over and check it out. LOL. I had a 240sx with RB25 back then and just punched it. Was sideways through 3rd. Not safe but fun and effective.

Stolen bikes aren't common around here. Everywhere around town $500+ bikes are sitting on people's porches without locks. Even the pawn shops leave their bikes sitting next to the sidewalk during the day. It's nice though because I'm not afraid to park my bike in front of a restaurant and go in and have a meal. I put a cheap ulock around the frame and wheel to keep someone from riding it away, but there's nothing to stop anyone from carrying it off. Even in tough economic times thieves would rather steal car stereos than bicycles. Besides, everyone knows that bikes are for kids and kids don't have much money. Car stereos are worth $10, so evidently they think my bike is worth less than that. I'm not complaining though.
Funny story though, about 2 months ago a person put a stolen bike listing on craigslist asking if anyone knew where their 197? red schwinn was at. A few hours later someone put a 197? red schwinn that had a matching description AND serial number on for $200. The person who owned the bike immediately removed their listing and called the thief up asking to look at the bike. Once they arrived and confirmed it was theirs, 2 cops came around the corner and arrested the thief. Some criminals really should find a different line of work. There was an article in the paper about it, and I cracked up laughing.
