Listening to on the commute?

I listen to the ipod during my commutes. I know some others do as well. Post what you're listening to here.

This morning I listened to centro-matic - all the falsest hearts

last night... edit - certified air raid material

I listen for horns, sirens, screeching tires, and other road hazards so I live to see my destination.

Oh...and I avoid riding anywhere near someone who has nubs in their ears. They have a hard time hearing me say "on your right" as I pass buy. Almost got hit once buy an "ear bud guy" that was startled and swerved as I passed.

My 2 gb shuffle spits out a variety of music.

Those that insist it unsafe listening to tunes while not knowing the particular conditions one rides in or what skills that rider has are simply morons. Carry on.

btw, riding with tunes requires a mirror, another controversial topic.

I listen to traffic; and not the one with Stevie Winwood, though I love them dearly.

I listen to a variety - this morning it was Smodcast. I keep the audio pretty quiet, so that I can hear most everything. This morning, I had a sticky link in my chain, and could hear it clacking every time. *sigh*

About the commute - it's 7 miles in the country. I don't remember the last time I was passed by a car.

Just to respond to some of those critics: I ride on a MUP where I am mostly alone these days... pretty sure it's safe riding with my ipod (not listening to music but spoken word at a very reasonable volume) with only one hear plugged in...

I'll typically listen to podcasts on the bike. This morning it was Car Talk and Will Shortz' Sunday Puzzle.

This winter, I've been listening to This American Life podcasts. I have all 399 episodes and I'm working through them one by one (started at episode 1 in October and I'm up to episode 140-something now). As an American living abroad, I really enjoy listening to these. I also have other NPR podcasts that I listen to.

It's been too rainy recently, so I don't risk shorting out my player... but when I do listen to stuff on my ride, it's usually one of my metal playlists.
When I listen to music, it's in one earbud only, on the right side. I just tuck the other one down the front of my jersey.

Lately, my listening has been limited to wind, traffic, wildlife and other assorted ambient noise. Almost daily for over the summer for a while I listened to my mp3 player during my commute (only right earphone inserted). Mostly podcasts (NPR and [Washington] Capitals Report).

My mp3 player has an FM tuner on it, too, so I would sometimes listen to live NPR or music radio, too. The best days were when I would listen to live NPR on the radio and the local traffic report would include bad traffic jams (as I rode past a virtual parking lot on 395/14th St Bridge or the GW Parkway) or metro delays. Made me feel especially happy to be on my bike - as if riding alone isn't enough to do that.

For those of you that have problems with people using ear buds We know already.. Give it a rest. For the rest of us I have only used the ear bud in my right ear but that has been a problem since you cannot hear the left channel, I found the company ScanSound on the internet that makes a single earpiece that plays both channels, way cool best of both wolds...

The worst is riding on a MUP, come up behind an iPoded runner and they decide they have finished their outward leg and pull a U-turn to their left, just as you're overtaking.

Hey, guys, remember that most of these devices have volume controls, eh? It's not like you have to listen at full blast, or even at a level more than you would if you were having a conversation with another rider. Or do y'all abstain from that too?

My MP3 contains audio books, most of which I download from the library. Right now it has:
  • Crucial Conversations
  • Crucial Confrontations
  • Motivator
  • SuperFreakEnomics
  • A podcast discussing Amazon's Dynamo system
  • Halo books 1-3

Strange as it might seem, I'm able to hear traffic, other riders, emergency vehicles, and even birds while I listen to my books. I do pull them out and/or stop playback if I ride with someone else and we decide to have a conversation, but that's because I find it difficult to keep track of two conversations at once.
