Just a reminder to you commuters...
BRING YOUR BICYCLE ON VACATION!!!
I only ride my bike 75ish miles a week and I am down here on the beach and I don't have my bicycle. Driving takes SOO long and all of the bike lanes look so inviting.

You can rent bikes, you know? Everything I've heard points to bringing a bike with you when traveling is just an added PITA that needn't be there.

Buy a folder, throw it in a suitcase and off you go. Mine goes practically everywhere with me when i travel,i even carry it in my semi. Great for exercise when having to drive for days at a time or in a new place to explore.

I'm going to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore next week for a 4-day, 3-night camping trip -- you had better believe my bike is coming with me I don't know the area well enough to know if there will be a bike rental concession within a reasonable distance, and since we're driving, it's no great hassle just to throw the bikes on the rack.
My roomie's bike is coming, too. I'm trying to get him to ride more, but he's still not terribly confident, so I'm thinking this will be a good opportunity for him to get some mileage in without having to worry about cars and so forth.
It's possible that I'm really just using this trip as an excuse to assemble a good portable bike-repair kit for my long rides, though

Share the road.
I know how you feel. I was in Mineapolis/St. Paul area for 3 weeks without a bicycle. It was like bicycle jungle with herds of cyclist go every which way. I bought a bike off craigslist for $70 and rode it for 1 1/2 weeks.

I take a bike on vacations whenever possible, particularly at the beach. I get bored sitting around watching waves.

Ride your bike to your vacation destination.Of course this requires planning and a shorter destination.
And then again I'm one that doesn't have much familiy to consider.Oh well take your bike, after all you are comfortable with it right.

depending on where I go and what kind of riding I might be doing I'll bring some kind of bike. But I have a real nice lightweight folder that I've taken to Lisbon and Rome on vacation in addition to lots of places in the US.

Not me, there's going to be a lot of sitting, and being driven around come vacation time this year, since I'm always on my feet at work or cycling to and from workplace during the remainder of the year.

I get travel sick in cars and my wife just goes to sleep. The in-laws take us for drives along the Niagara river... we're busy looking at the cyclists on the trail or feeling sick and asleep. So now we ride there, so we have our bikes on hand, just got to figure out a way to transport the wine bottles better
